Horse racing is a sport, and a good one, but it should not take the place of hockey.
NBC, as you know, showed the Preakness Stakes pre-race show instead of overtime of the Ottawa-Buffalo series clincher. I for one think this was a dumb move. If you read Allan Muir's article about it on SI.com, you'll see that the choice to not show overtime was embarrassing to the NHL. Plus, it left hockey fans all across the country watching men chat about horses and blah blah blah instead of getting to watch their hockey, which was very exciting. I watched some of the game myself.
The hockey was shown on Versus. Many people, including myself, do not have access to Versus. So people like me who wanted to continue watching the Sens-Sabres game couldn't. This was really humilitating to the NHL. Think about it. NBC would rather show the PRE=RACE show to the Preakness than the elimination game of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The actual race, I'd understand. But the PRE-RACE!!! The NHL would have the right to think their sport is not what it used to be. It was dumped for a HORSE RACE, for crying out loud! I do like hockey, but ever since the lockout I have not been what i used to be, a loyal hockey fan. I have recently been trying to get back into hockey. Really, it's a good sport. It's better than horse racing, at least.
