This is going to get screwed up. Bud Selig apparently thinks he has enough votes for the new MLB instant replay rule to pass. We all want instant replay in baseball. It's an idea whose time has come. But leave it to baseball and Mr. Selig to screw it up. Managers will get 3 challenges - 2 in the first 6 innings, then 1 after that - per game. Putting this power in a manager's hands is the first mistake. Managers are crafty guys. That's how they got where they are. They will misuse/abuse as soon as the figure out the best way to, and baseball will be stuck with it. The other mistake of the rule is only one challenge after inning 6. So if the umps - who will become used to not making firm calls after this rule goes into effect - happen to blow two calls, for example, before inning 9, and then make a 3rd blunder - well, sorry all challenges have been used up. You will be stuck with that 3rd messed up call. And baseball fans will be stuck with another misguided attempt to make the game better. How about having the call reviewed when the umpires want it reviewed? Similar to the college football review? Seems an opportunity has been missed here.

The preseason has started and the injuries are piling up. But have you noticed something? Many of these major injuries are happening in practice - not during the games. So how about that logic of cutting down the preseason to 2 games to avoid injuries? Uh, as long as they're still going to practice, things will happen. I think 4 games is actually the right amount of preseason games. Watch these first two weeks of games - you think your team is ready to go full-bore? No way. They are still getting used to new teammates, new schemes and new coaches. The 4/16 model works, it has worked for a long time and there's no reason to fix something that isn't broken.

Thanks to Stelio for letting me blog today. You all have a good weekend and drink good beer.

Unless and until they tweak it and get it right.

Really Hammered? You don't?

I'd say the majority of baseball fans want them to use technology to get the right call. But I'll accept the minority like yourself who enjoy flawed human judgement.

Appreciate your comment

They'll never get it perfect, but replay is much better than what they have now. Any bad call that effects the outcome of a game should be able to be reviewed. It's been helping in the NFL even though it's not perfect there.
