For the first time in the history of the SI NBA Player Rating System, Kevin Garnett (No. 24) is nowhere to be found among the top 20 players, due to an abdominal strain that has kept him sidelined for the last nine games. While the Celtics haven't wavered in their quest to craft the NBA's best record in his absence, his fantasy owners haven't been as lucky. Injuries, illnesses and trades (both made and discussed) have caused a major shakeup at the top of the Rankings here at the All Star break, proving once again that luck is a major component in all competitions, especially of the fantasy variety.
Looking forward, we can only guess how much time, if any, Kobe Bryant (No. 3) will miss with his torn tendon, if and when players such as Garnett, Shaq (No. 147), Caron Butler (No. 30), Josh Howard (No. 43), etc. will return, and how much of an impact players such as Elton Brand (n/a), Shaun Livingston (n/a) and Gilbert Arenas (still No. 294) will have on their teams -- both real and fantasy -- in the season's final two months. We also are poking around in the dark regarding how much the whole Jason Kidd (No. 41) fiasco (here's a bet that the trade doesn't happen) will have on the value of Richard Jefferson (no. 26), Vince Carter (No. 37) and Dirk Nowitzki (No. 8) and whether the deal could make or break Antoine Wright (No. 227) and Jerry Stackhouse (No. 207) .
