I'm going to jump on the bandwagon that Steve Lavin started during last night's Indiana/Purdue broadcast. Any conversation about Player of the Year has to include DJ White! He has been huge for this Indiana team, especially in conference play.
1. He's a testament to player development and potential in a returning fourth year senior.
2. He exemplifies senior leadership on a young team with many outside distractions and excuses, likely including a late-season coaching change.
3. He is averaging a double/double (17+ ppg and 10+ rpg) in a conference that pounds on its big men. And, including last night's win versus Purdue, he is performing at this level on a knee that we know to be less than 100%.
I don't think DJ will win POY. Simply stated, there are other players with better numbers (Beasley), and I don't think the national press has the Big Ten as one of its glamour conferences this season (Hansbrough). That said, it is hard to find a player who has been more inspirational to his team and more instrumental in his team's success this season. He gets my vote.
