Even though it's just the middle of February, it's nice to think that in a few months the Summer Olympics in Beijing will be taking place. Since August is still a ways away, I think it would be interesting to hear what people think are the all-time best moments in Olympic history. And not only that, what images stand out to you?
I think of Rulon Gardner doing a sommersault after beating Alexander Karelin for the Greco-Roman Gold Medal back in Sydney. I think of Mike Eruzione standing on the podium after the national anthem was played and not knowing what to do. I think of Tonya Harding crying, holding her broken-laced skate up. I think of Muhammad Ali lighting the torch in Atlanta, Vince Carter jumping over (literally) a 7-foot Frenchmen for a jam. I think of Jamaican bobsleds, black power signs, Spitz's head hitting the backboard, Bob Costas' voice, Kerri Strug (and of course Chris Kattan imitating Kerri Strug on SNL).
What I think is great about the Olympics is that there are so many memorable moments out there that it would be impossible to include them all in a single blog. The Olympics are also very generational, and some of my moments wouldn't even register with those older than me because I wasn't alive to witness Jesse Owens, or Jim Thorpe, or Muhammad Ali competing in the games.
What moments am I forgetting? Do athletes get remembered more for their accomplishments or their failures in the Olympics?
