Review of this Years NBA Trades

I'll start with Kyle Korver and end with the trades that went down today.

The Utah Jazz trade G Gordan Gricek and a 2008 1st round draft pick to the Philidelphia 76ers for G/F Kyle Korver.

The Jazz pick up a sharpshooter and a perimeter scorer which they were lacking with Ronnie Price at the 2. The 76ers get cap relief and a long term prospect in Gricek. The draft pick looks to be in the mid 20's.

Verdict: The Jazz get a good player for hardly nothing. Korver will help them down the stretch.

The Los Angeles Lakers trade G Javaris Crittenton, G Aaron Mckie, C Kwame Brown and the draft rights of F/C Marc Gasol to the Memphis Grizzlies for Pau Gasol.

The Lakers get one of the best big men in the NBA in Pau Gasol without giving up any critical pieces for a title run. The Grizzlies take on the huge contract of former #1 Overall draft pick Kwame Brown and get a young PG in Crittenton hta can be developed.

Verdict: The Lakers become one of the favorites in the West with Gasol a 20 point 12 rebound a night guy. Memphis gets cap relief with the expiring contracts of Kwame and Aaron Mckie.

The New Jersey Nets send C Jason Collins to the Memphis Grizzlies for F/C Stromile Swift.

The Nets give up Collins a very bad offensive and defensive player and get Swift who has some potential to be a good offensive player. Collins has the bigger contract  by $.3 million but it expires after the 08-09 season while Swift's expires after this season.

Verdict: The Nets win in this one giving up one of the worst contracts in all of basketball to get an expiring one.

The Phoenix Suns send F Sean Marion and G Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat for C Shaquille O'Neal.

The Heat get another superstar in Marion to help Wade. Marion can opt out after this season but whether he stays or goes doesn't really matter. The Heat get 16 million in cap room if he does or they get another player to rebuild with. The Suns get the Big Diesel and his $20 million contract for the next 2 years. It will be interesting to see if he can play in the run n gun style of the Suns over at 36.

Verdict: Relatively equal trade. The Suns get a low post presence and the Heat get a very good player back.

The Atlanta Hawks send G Tyronn Lue, G Anthony Johnson,F/C Shelden Williams, C Lorenzen Wright, and a 2008 2nd round pick to the Sacremento Kings for G Mike Bibby.

The Hawks get an experienced PG in Bibby who can lead them to the playoffs. The Kings get 2 young PG and the 5th overall pick 2 years ago Shelden williams. Paired with Spencer Hawes those 2 could form a formidable duo in the Great Northwest.

Verdict: The Hawks get Bibby an experienced PG who will help them down the stretch. The Kings get rid of Bibby's $14 million a year contract and get a young frontcourt player and the expiring contracts of Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, and Lorenzen Wright.

The Dallas Mavericks send G Devin Harris, G Maurice Ager, G/F Trenton Hassel, C Desagana Diop, cash, a 2008 1st round pick, and a 2010 1st round pick to the New Jersey Nets for G Jason Kidd.

The Mavericks get an experienced PG in Kidd who can do it all and is one of the best true PG's in the game. The Nets get Kidd's monster contract off their backs along with a talented young PG in Devin Harris. The 1st round picks don't figure to be very high.

Verdict: The Mavs get a top 5 PG to lead their team in the playoffs. The Nets get anopther young PG in Harris along with Marcus williams. That will be interesting to see how that ends up. VAn Horn's contract is undisclosed but it should offer some cap relief.

The San Antonio Spurs send G Brent Barry and C Francisco Elson and a 2009 1st round pick to the Seattle SuperSonics for C Kurt Thomas.

The Spurs get another low post presence who can really rebound. The Sonics end up getting 3 1st round picks from Thomas. 2 from Phoenix and 1 from San Antonio. Besides that they get Olson a young C who will get a chance to play right away with Kevin Durant & company.

Verdict: The Spurs get someone who can fill in for Duncan if he needs some rest. The Sonics get Barry's expiring contract and a young player with a ton of potential.

The Detroit Pistons send C Primoz Brezec to the Toronto Raptors for G Juan Dixon.

Each team gets help wherre they need it. The Raptors needed another low post scorer and someone who could rebound of the bench. The Pistons needed a guard who they could depend on to run the offense while Billups is out or just to give Rip Hamilton a rest.

Verdict: Each team wins. Their contracts match and each runs out after this season. Detroit gets a good backup guard and Toronto gets a low post presence.

The Houston Rockets send G/F Kirk Snyder, cash, and a 2nd round pick in 2010 to the Minnesota Timberwolves for G/F Gerald Green.

The Rockets get a very talented player in Gerald Green who will come off the bench and get some playing time. The Timberwolves get cash which is always good , a 2nd round pick in 3 years, and Kirk Snyder's expiring contract.

Verdict: The Rockets get a scorer off the bench to replace James and Wells. The T-Wolves get some cap relief and a future player.

Now here are the 3 way trades. these are a bit different. I'm gonna list each team and what they got.

New Orleans Hornets-recieve G Mike James and F Bonzi Wells

Houston Rockets- recieve G Bobby Jackson, G Adam Haluska, and a 2008 2nd round pick from New Orleans, and the draft rights to Sergei Lishouk from Memphis

Memphis Grizzlies- recieves F Marcus Vinicius from New Orleans and the draft rights to F/C Malick Badiane from Houston.

The Hornets improve their bench greatly adding 2 scorers in Wells and James. Houston gets an expiring contract in Jackson and getssa young shooter in Haluska. memphis gets 2 foreign players who have not played very much in the US. Well actually Badiane hasn't at all.

This deal has not been approved by the league office yet but is likely to go through.

Chicago Bulls- recieve G Larry Hughes, G Shannon Brown, F Cedric Simmons, F Drew Gooden

Cleveland Cavaliers- recieve G Delonte West, G/F Wally Szczerbiak, F Joe Smith, F/C Ben Wallace, and a future 2nd round pick from Chicago

Seattle Sonics- recieve G Adrian Griffin, F Ira Newble, F Donyell Marshall

The Bulls recieve Gooden to replace Wallace as their low post presence. While not as good on D as Wallace, Gooden is a much better offensive player. They also get Larry Hughes who can play the 2 or the 3. The Cavs get shooters Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak, as well as dominating Defender ben Wallace. The Sonics get big cap relief to help for the future.

Verdict: The Cavs get the best of this deal getting a better supporting cast for Lebron. The Bulls shake up their roster looking to make a playoff run. The Sonics get $9 million in cap relief after this season.

Thank you for reading. Comments are appreciated as well as ? just post them below. Thanks indy

I saw that Cleveland deal earlier, I can't believe that it might go through. The Bulls signed Wallace to a big contract and now they are already trading him. Getting rid of Larry Hughes may of been a mistake though . . .

This is mostly grammar nitpicking (I'm already in a bad mood), informative blog though.

"The 76ers get cap relief and a long term prospect in Gricek."

Giricek is 30 or 31 years old. Not much of a prospect.

"The Grizzlies take on the huge contract of former #1 Overall draft pick Kwame Brown"
"Memphis gets cap relief with the expiring contracts of Kwame and Aaron Mckie"

Contradiction anyone? How are they taking on a huge contract, yet getting relief?

"Swift who has some potential to be a good offensive player"

Swift is 28. I'd say his potential is just about dried up. He has potential for some good performances every once in a while, but not much left as a player.

"Paired with Spencer Hawes those 2 could form a formidable duo in the Great Northwest."

Sacramento is more just west. Portland and Seattle = Great Northwest. LA = Southwest. Sacramento = west.

And work on your grammar, spelling, puncuation, capitalization, understanding of the English language as a whole, etc.

I think if you did that it would be a good blog.

Are you calling this a bad blog, DJ. How dare you?

Good job Indy.

I think the Cavs got better and the Sonics got screwed. LeBron, Szczerbiak, and Gibson should see a lot of spot up shots.

Good move by the Cavaliers front office.

Hopefully the team will project the starting lineup like this:

PG- Delonte West
SG- Wally Szczerbiak or Sasha Pavlovic
SF- LeBron James
PF- Ben Wallace
C - Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Bench:

C/PF- Joe Smith
C/PF- Anderson Varejao
PG - Daniel Gibson
G/F - Sasha Pavlovic or Wally Szczerbiak
G/F - Devin Brown
PG - Eric Snow
G - Damon Jones

The Cavs become a better team with a stronger second unit and more versatility and toughness, now they are better able to compete with both the Eastern and Western Conference Elite teams.

With a player of LeBron James talent and court awareness/vision a true point guard is not necessarily what is needed. West and Szczerbiak are good enough perimeter options and upgrades at those positions offensively, Big "Z" will benefit from partnering with Wallace in the low post improving the offensive rebounding and second chance points plus the Cavs are now more formidable on the defensive end, LeBron will be free to roam on both ends of the court and pick teams apart, When the team is totally healthy by playoff time they will be very challenging to be beaten by any team in the league.

Good Move Cavaliers!!

Who is Olson that your talking about in the Sonics trade?

Report Offensive Comment

It's Elson and he is a young center with some ability. He is around 7 feet. he is decent on Defense but is somewhat raw on offense
