A tale of two teams. The Bobcat men's basketball team is trying to do something they haven't done too often in recent years, make it to the conference tournament. Let's face it, the men's basketball program has not been good in the past few years. Thanks to Coach Doug Davalos and his good recruiting and a great group of young players and a few veterans the program is turning around but may not yet be ready for the conference tourney. Here's what has to happen in the view of Bobcatalum05 who also blogs here. The ‘Cats must win at least two more games and I would personally be more comfortable if they only dropped one of their final four games, that one would most likely be against Stephen F. Austin, one of the conference leaders. That would mean winning a tough road game at Sam Houston (the ‘Cats beat Sam at home) and winning home games against UT. Arlington and UTSA. The home win against SFA would be a great bonus and would have the ‘Cats enter the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the conference, but first things first, the ‘Cats best chance to win out of all of these games is Saturday against UTSA so let's win that one first and then worry about the rest.

Then there is the amazing women's team. Blowing the competition away all season the women are at the top of the conference, an amazing 11-1 record, assured a spot in the tournament and it would be surprising if they didn't win that tournament and get into the NCAA tournament. The 17-8 overall record, which would be 21-8 at the end of the regular season if the ‘Cats win out should be good enough to get into the NCAA tournament even without winning the conference tournament and get the automatic bid, but it's doubtful the NCAA would give the women an at-large bid. It's difficult for any team playing in the Southland Conference to get an at-large bid to any NCAA tournament even if their record deserves it (see SFA's volleyball team in 2007 among a long list of others). The biggest challenge for the women is that all of the last four games (and the tournament of course) are all road games. This season that hasn't made much of a difference but it's always an advantage playing at home just because of the familiar surroundings and no long bus trips if nothing else. So all of you Bobcats in San Antonio, Nacogdoches, Huntsville and Arlington it's time to step up and go support the women's team. Back to the men's team for a minute you folks around Huntsville (including the Houston area) March 1^st is your day, that's when the men and women have a double header at Sam Houston so you guys show up, wear maroon and gold, and be loud loud loud for both of our teams.
