With free agency starting on Friday the Cowboys got a jump on the competition. Fresh off his release from the Miami Dolphins, Zach Thomas has agreed to a one year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. Sources report it is a one year 3 million dollar deal.
I think this is a good addition to the Cowboys. He had injury issues last year. But, when healthy he still had over 10 tackles a games. He automatically becomes the best tackler on this team. He is a consistent guy who always seems to be around the ball. He also brings something this very young D, filled with high draft picks needs. Leadership, they have almost nothing but young guys on the front seven. The only veterans of near Zach's stature are Greg Ellis and Jason Ferguson. Greg Ellis is not a leader. He is not a guy to be looked up to. He whines every year about his contract or his position. He does not put the team first. Zach is a great leader and can really help Kevin Burnett and Anthony Spencer, among others. As for the guy he will most likely be replacing. Akin Ayodele, he has not lived up to billing ever since we signed him. Last year he was splitting time with Kevin Burnett and in 16 games made 57 tackes. Zach in comparision made 52 in only 5 games. That is a huge upgrade for the team with the best record in the NFC. Also the said improvement of Burnett will make it possible to keep Zach fresh at his older age.
The Patriots have shown that the right mix of old and young linebackers can be a great thing for a defense. I for one find this to be a smart signing for a team that is just a few pieces short of a championship. Veteran leadership can never be discounted. The free agency season is upon us in the great year round world of the NFL.
Let the games begin!!!
