When do you the Phillies usa a relief pitcher to much? Good question but no good answers. Imagine you were Charlie Manuel and besides Myers coming out of the pen your options were very limited or none.
Myers recently pitched in 4 of 5 games and two were nonsave situations. Since he has gone to the pen he has appeared in 17 of the Phillies 31 games . That would be over the course of a full season 86 games. Four of his last seven game have been for more than one inning. Over the course of a full season if assume that 20% of his games go more than one inning then he will pitch over 100 innings.
The problem for Charlie is Myers has been unbelievable in the pen. His era is 0.90 in the pen, he is 6 for 7 in save opportunities and he has no other choices in the bullpen.
I am bringing this up because I think the Phillies need to be careful in how they use Myers for the rest of the season. I will be blogging about this in the future but I wonder if the better starting pitching we have seen actually makes the problem with Myers a little more difficult. Better and longer starts for the starting pitchers means Phillies are winning or close in these games and this should mean more save opportunities. Shorter starts means Phillies getting blown out = less save opportunities.

I agree with you in theory. I think the way that Manuel is looking at it though is that if he can't win now, then it won't matter if Myers is rested later because they'll be out of it. The Phils' margin for error is slight, and they have to do whatever it takes to win now. If they can, then they'll at least be alive later and then later can take care of itself.
