Operative description of the day: Too darn cold for Florida (although it was announced that the gametime temperatre in Detroit was 18 degrees).
GOOD IMPRESSIONS: Minor league outfielder Wilkin Ramirez drove in the go-ahead two runs with a single and now has four RBIs in two games this spring. He's the top rated prospect left in the Mets system,
Fernando Martinez had a single in his only trip to the plate, fighting off a tough two strike pitch to the opposite field.
Mike Hessman continues to display power but hasn't gotten a chance to crack Detroit's lineup. Keep an eye on him should he turn up on somebody else's roster.
BAD IMPRESSIONS: Jeremy Bonderman got into trouble in both of the innings he worked and he gave up two runs on four hits in the process. He wasn't helped by an Angel Pagan grounder second baseman Placido Polanco had trouble getting a handle on that was scored a hit to lead off the game. Bonderman also walked one, but the next five Tiger hurlers held New York to just three base runners over the game's final seven innings.
With runners at first and second, shortstop Edgar Renteria dropped a first inning popup yet was able to force the runner at second base after he recovered, one-hopping a throw to second baseman Placido Polanco.
It wasn't such a great day either for Mets lefty reliever Willie Collazo, who got manhandled by the Tigers B team. After being one-hit by a quintet of Mets pitchers for the first six innings, Mike Hessman hit a rocket off the fence and Marcus Thames followed with a scorched doulbe to break the schneid and put the Tigers on their way to a four run inning. Collazo was hit HARD.
MIXED IMPRESSIONS: Former Cuban national team member Michel Abreu has been driving the ball well and impressed with decent speed, scoring from first base on a Marlon Anderson triple to right. Although he made no errors, his footwork around the first base bag made Carlos Delgado look like J.T. Snow, or in other words, he plays first like he should DH.
Looking for a place to play now that third base has been taken away from him, Brandon Inge had an RBI single and a walk but misplayed a ball in centerfield that every one of the other Tiger outfielders would have had easily.
