Its a beautiful sunny day here in Clearwater, famous for being the home to the original Hooters restaurant, the Hulk Hogan family, and the softest white sand beaches you'll find anywhere. Unfortunately nobody will be on that beach today because Florida is still going through a deep cold spell, with temps in the area dipping below 40 this morning.
Unlike the Mets at yesterday's game, the Pirates sent a host of potential fantasy contributors up Route 19 to beautiful Bright House field, the newest of Florida's spring training facilities. Among those making the trip from Bradenton are shortstop Brian Bixler, Nate McLouth (leading off and playing center), McLouth's main competition for the CF jon, Nyjer Morgan playing left today, as well as regulars Xavier Nady, Ronny Paulino and Adam LaRoche.
Brian Bullington is starting for the Bucs, but the mlost interesting player toeing the rubber today will be Jaret Wright, who if he has something left in his many-times over rehabilitated right arm, could resurrect his career on a staff in search of bullpen depth.
On the hill for the Phillies (and not the Yomiuri Giants as he was led to believe he would be in an elaborate prank made famous on YouTube) is second year right-hander Kyle Kendrick, who was a pleasant surprise for the Phils NL East champions and wise fantasy owners last year, going 10-4 with a 3.87 ERA.
The Phils are featuring most of the usual suspects for a spring home game giving the fans a thrill by having the entire regular starting infield and catcher (Ruiz) in the lineup today. Also playing is Brett Favre doppleganger Geoff Jenkins, who I can not stress this enough, is still just 33 years old and is a tremendous sleeper candidate this year.
More to come later.
