I know it's tourney time and people have buzzer beater dreams of mid-major teams and 12 seed upsets dancing in their head, but given what I have seen in the NCAA this season has been far from One Shining Moment. From cheating with Kelvin Sampson to rude fans, and that Memphis-UAB game that disgusts me in ways I never though possible. I know Grant Whal from SI did an article like this, but I feel the best way to get something off my chest is to blog about it, feel free to leave your comments on the bottom of the page.
NCAA basketball fans are the greatest sports fans in the world. There I said it, better than Red Sox, Celtic, Yankee, Laker, and any soccer hooligan in the world. They are loud, proud, at times fuuny, and love their team through the conference championships to the NIT berths. But with all this praise they have one flaw. There are so damn rude. They send death threats to players who don't chose their schools. when their team loses a chance for an upset they throw debris at the players and referees. They go on Facebook and harrass opposing teams players by "poking" them several hundreds of times. I have no problem with a good old chant like F-U CSU and Teabag Palus, but sending death threats is wrong and be more creative than Facebook, do the old call the hotel room during their pregame nap if they have one. I laughed when Oregon had the Fatty Love signs, but harrassing the parents, come on the players are conditioned to block that out and I am sure Stan Love, a former NBA player can handle it, but their mom's and granparents? Eric Gordon's mom took a glassful of water to the face because his son commited to Illinois, but changed to Indiana for his own choice. If your coach was good enough at recruiting it wouldn't matter who didn't sign, but who did, because you would be talking about your NCAA berth or Big Ten championship not a recruit who flipped flopped.
Speakin of Eric Gordon, that brings me to the Indiana mess, which I feel has been handled the right way so far. You can't fire a guy in the NCAA now because of the Jim O'Brien fiasco, but pressuring him into resifgning is exactly the right thing to do. The players are mad and their boycott threat was a little too half-hearted for anyone to take it seriously. They need to prove to the NCAA that they are serious about cleaning up their program or they will be watching Marc Madness on CBS for the next 4 years. They have a big decision to make. They can go for the Final Four with an interim coach and Final Four Talent, or they can lose Eric Gordon and White and suspend themselves from the playoffs and hope the NCAA allows them to play postseason and put them on harsh probation, and start from scratch next year. If I was AD at IU I would see if I could get a commitment from Gordon, not that his word matters and then depending on his decision, go from there. If he does stay, I would go for it another year and suspend my team, if he says no, I still would suspend myself because with an adjustmen period in between coaches likely going into the tourney, it seems the first two games will be tougher than most people think. If they still had Sampson i would go for all the Marbles because I had IU in the Final Four before he resigned, now they are Elite Eight at best. This should be a message to coaches everywhere cheat does not pay.
In conclusion the NCAA needs to clean up it's act fast because I would hate to see the NCAA turn into a Mickey Mouse League.

i completely agree. 100%. I read that article the other day. And I think you did a better job than Wahl describing the situation. Great Job!

Dakich is always around at IU. He will turn the head coach position to the new head coach when they are picked. A good guy to have around.
