I think Hank Steinbrenner should be seen and not heard. Whether he was right or not....and I say NOT, he just shouldn't be talking. Yes, I'm a Red Sox fan, but that's not why I'm writing this. Yes, I hate the Yankees and.....of course that's why I'm writing this. Seriously, I don't hate all things "Yankees" just the owners. My first point is: the only team that is "America's Team" is the one that represents the U.S.A. at the olympics. The term "Red Sox Nation" is just a phrase for Red Sox fans in and around the Boston area. The term "Yankees Empire", you'll notice I left off "evil", is just a phrase for those fans in NY. Second point: I don't believe attendance is the sole measure of greatness, unless you can say everyone in attendance is a true yankees fan or Red Sox fan. Even then the attendance is based on gate receipts and from season ticket holders. Not all season ticket holders are at every game, but they are counted anyway. When you have a city as large and populated as NY you're bound to get a bigger attendance. There might be 25-30% Mets fans, if their team is out of town. As far as popularity, I think the Yankess and Red Sox are on the same level. Now if Steinbrenner had compared his team with say....Tampa Bay, then yeah he might be right there. Third point: We need to get more competitive teams. The 2007 payroll for the Yankees was around 195+ Million and Tampa Bay was around 24+ Million. Can you say A-Rod!!!! We need more then 10 contending teams and 20 playing for fun.

That was my point, right now I think we only have about 10 that even have a chance to win. I don't think we'll ever get all 30 teams competitive.

Steinbrenner needs to shut up.
Whats so amusing is no matter how he goads the sox? not a peep from Henry or Lucchino or Epstein.
Not a peep.
I cant imagine Yankee fans are thrilled with his big yap either. Its not going to get the Yankees cheered at away games, it's going to get them boo'd
Cant wait for them to come to Boston. HA !
nice work Sandy :-)

I think he is just trying to stir the pot, get that edge back, as much as us Bostonians hate the yanks, besides Arod its a likeable bunch of guys, and I think Hank is trying to make us REALLY HATE the Yanks, so in return is guys will feel same way and give that little extra

The Yanks have bigger attendance because they have a bigger park. The Red Sox have sold out Fenway Park for many consecutive seasons.
Red Sox Nation refers to the tribe of Sox fans around the world, not just in MA.

I would have to say that at least in the area in which I live (Cincinnati) that Hanky boy is WAY off base... yes, you can see a significant number of people wearing Yankee's caps, but few of them are true fans (following games and players, etc.)... the Reds are playing both teams this year and guess what? The Red Sox are going to be such a big draw that they made them part of their special "Power Pack" specials... they are the ONLY tickets this year that you can't buy normally... also they have talked about the matchup constantly on the news, which is saying something since the games aren't until June... the Yankees games? Haven't heard a single word about them on the news and there are no specials... tells you a bit about why Hank is so scared that he felt the need to comment to the press, eh?

I dont know what turns my stomach more:
Patriots talk or Red Sox-Yanks talk????
Hey Sandy, having more than one favorite team isnt smooth. Stay with your Dodgers honey and you wouldnt have all this heartache. Swear.

"The term "Red Sox Nation" is just a phrase for Red Sox fans in and around the Boston area"
Not true, Having lived in New England for 25 years before returning home to NC, as well as travelling allover the US for business and pleasure, I can tell you that Red Sox Nation is coast to coast. I go to Sox games when ever I can, where ever I can and I am NEVER alone regradless of where we are.
Home attendance isn't the measuring stick, the increase in attendance on the road as well as merchandise tells the tale. Both the Sox and Yanks lead by large margins in these categories. The Yankees traditionally always draw the best away from home and sell the most merchandise and still do however the gap between the two has closed the last few years.

My point about Red Sox Nation was that its just aphrase for all inclusive fans of the Red Sox. There certainly are fans outside of Boston, but the majority are there. Cassidy: I find it hard to leave alone when someone like "Hank" talks about my Sox. I will still remain a Dodger fan, but right now they are in the new much.
