First it was Asante Samuel signing with the Eagles for a 6 yr deal. 57 million. Far short of the 10 yr 100 million he was asking for. But a good deal nonetheless for the up to now, flightless birds of Philly. This wasn't a surprise, noone expected the Patriots to overpay Asante - and true to form, they didn't.
Now it's Donte Stallworth signing with the Browns. 10 Million in guaranteed money. Now this isnt exactly a surprise, we all knew that Stallworth wouldn't be in New England and I called it this morning when I said on a T & R thread that I expected Stallworth to sign with Cleveland or New Orleans. Cleveland has done some major damage in this first weekend of Free Agency. Whereas the Steelers have had a virtual lock on the division for several years, those days are numbered. Cleveland and Crennell are building a powerful looking team. If I was a Steeler fan, I would start looking in that rear view mirror.
Now, its Randall Gay, with visits to New Orleans today and next to Tampa Bay and then Detroit. Will he stay? Will he go ? I'm betting he goes. This leaves a huge hole in the Patriots defense. Ellis Hobbs isn't going to fill the shoes of Asante or Randall. Neither is Mixon or Richardson. Patriots need some corners and they need them sooner rather than later.
Reports today are quoting Moss as saying he's frustrated with the way negotiations are going with the Patriots and as far as he's concerned, he's going to listen to other offers. According to Moss, he gave the Patriots a deep discount last year and has no desire to "discount" his services again. Apparently Randy believes that he was so successful in Minnesota and Oakland that Brady had very little to do with his record breaking season and he is able to put those same numbers up on another team. Word has it that Favre is holding out on announcing his return until he finds out if they will go after Moss. Favre was angry and vocal about it last year when GB didn't pursue Moss as hard as he wanted them too. Well Randy, if the helmet is too tight for your big head, then by all means. Head down the same path as other Patriot players who thought the same thing.
Before you go though, you may want to give Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, Deion Branch, Daniel Graham, Reche Caldwell and a few others a call. Find out how it worked for them.
The Patriot roster is being depleted. I have to believe they know what they're doing. Belichick and Pioli have something planned. I'm just not sure what.
