Accustomed to shooting more free throws than opponents, the USC Trojans were incredulous after Arizona State was awarded 36 second-half attempts. "The foul calls were just ridiculous," said Taj Gibson, who was the second Trojan to foul out when he was disqualified with 8 minutes 30 seconds remaining. "I'm not taking anything away from Arizona State -- they played a great game -- but at the end of the game you look at the foul calls and you've got to question it. Half of our starting five fouled out." USC nearly ran out of players after two starters and two reserves fouled out, finishing the game with a lineup that included two walk-ons, two reserves and starting guard Dwight Lewis.
As a fan, I'm often very aggrivated over bad calls, especially in a good game. As a player, I become enfuriated. Nothing is worse than being a player or coach in a game where the ref blows it with bad calls. A few here and there might be tolerable, but thirty-six?! Who does this guy think he is? Thirty-six free throw attempts gives a team a possible seventy-two points. Seventy-two points could potentially win a whole game by itself! How are you going to foul out two starters and two reserve players in a single half?
