If you missed yesterday's post, it was a little late in posting and you can find it here. Today is a new day though and The Stack is here to talk about the few other things making headlines besides the MNF game as well so let's get right to it and see what made "the stack" for today, Tuesday, September 24:
Broncos destroy Raiders on MNF
It was over fairly quickly in Denver last night. Peyton Manning threw three first half touchdowns and finished with 374 yards and those three scores in the Broncos 37-21 win over the Oakland Raiders. It was over by halftime. The Broncos moved up and down the field while the Raiders simply didn't have enough firepower to keep pace. Terrelle Pryor looks like he is going to be very good in Oakland, but on a night like last night, it's all about Manning and the Broncos. That offense is almost unstoppable. Eric Decker had the big night last night. Who do you try to stop? So many weapons. It will be a huge disappointment if this team fails to reach the Super Bowl.
Pirates, Reds clinch playoff spots
Let the champaign bottles get uncorked in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are back in the playoffs. Coupled with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pirates are headed to the playoffs. What a turnaround for this team and you have to feel good for those long suffering Pirates fans. They are back in the playoffs. Only thing better would be if the Pirates could host the play-in game against Cincinnati who is in the playoffs as well following their 3-2 win over the New York Mets in ten innings. The atmosphere at PNC Park would be simply amazing. We'll have to wait and see. There will be more on The Hunt for October the rest of the week here in "the stack".
Not all good news though in MLB. Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado suffered a gruesome knee injury against the Tampa Bay Rays Monday afternoon in which it looked like his knee simply buckled out from under him as he stepped on first base. Sad to see. Wishing Machado a speedy, full and healthy recovery. The Orioles lost 5-4 and their playoff hopes are near gone.
Maple Leafs-Sabres drop the gloves
Preseason hockey normally doesn't make an appearnce in "the stack" but it does today following the big brawl a couple of days ago between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. Over 200 penalty minutes in the melee and a couple of suspensions have been handed down by the NHL including a big star for the Maple Leafs David Clarkson who has been suspended ten games. The video is worth a look. Oh by the way, the NHL season begins next week. Can't wait.
NFL Week 3 Power Rankings
1. Denver Broncos 3-0
What else can you say about Peyton Manning that hasn't already been said?
2. Seattle Seahawks 3-0
Hard to gauge too much on the Seahawks when they play the worst team in football. This team looks like the team to beat in the NFC.
3. Chicago Bears 3-0
defense picked up the slack for the offense against Pittsburgh. Still
not a full believer in this team yet, but more games like the ones
against Pittsburgh will make me one.
4. Kansas City Chiefs 3-0
Don't laugh. The Chiefs are legit. Good defense and an offense that doesn't turn the ball over. Love what Andy Reid has done in KC.
5. New England Patriots 3-0
Finally the Patriots put together an all-around good game. Gronk is coming back soon. That will make the Patriots that much better on offense.
6. New Orleans Saints 3-0
Seriously, is there a better combination in the NFL than Drew Brees to Jimmy Graham?
7. Miami Dolphins 3-0
the win over the Falcons, the Dolphins took a big step forward toward
legitimacy. They're building something good in South Florida.
8. Indianapolis Colts 2-1
What a performance by Indy going into the bay and taking it to the 49ers. With Trent Richardson, the Colts have a great offense now that will have balance. If the defense plays like that every week, watch out.
9. Cincinnati Bengals 2-1
Bengals showed tremendous adversity in coming back and beating the
Packers. This team is legit and showed it on all sides of the ball.
10. Dallas Cowboys 2-1
See what happens Dallas when you choose to run the ball? DeMarco Murray gets 175 yards and a touchdown and you blow out teams like the Rams.
11. Atlanta Falcons 1-2
think that if the Falcons hadn't lost so many people to injury between
week 2 and week 3 that they would have beat the Dolphins. No need to
panic in the ATL.
12. Baltimore Ravens 2-1
win by the Ravens crushing Houston. They're starting to show signs of
things coming together. And they won convincingly without Ray Rice.
13. Green Bay Packers 1-2
Good news: The Packers running game is starting to really come together. Bad news: Their running backs can't stay healthy.
14. Houston Texans 2-1
Until Matt Schaub gets out of mediocrity, the Texans won't advance very far in the playoffs...if they get there this year.
15. Detroit Lions 2-1
Matthew Stafford was great and the Lions won without Reggie Bush. With Bush, they're that much more dangerous on offense.
16. San Francisco 49ers
Perhaps a little steep of a drop, but Colin Kaepernick does not look like himself and the 49ers have now been beaten down two weeks in a row. Didn't think we'd ever say that.
17. Tennessee Titans 2-1
Titans, like the Chargers are a team that could easily by 3-0. Nice
last second win against San Diego. The Titans are starting to build
something that could make the AFC South very interesting.
18. Philadelphia Eagles 1-2
Chip Kelly's offense has hit a bump in the road. And now they get to go to Denver to face Peyton Manning? Can you say 1-3?
19. San Diego Chargers 1-2
had that game against Tennessee until the final seconds. This team
could easily be 3-0. You are what your record says you are however.
20. New York Jets 2-1
Great defense by the Jets. That will keep them in games and they could win a few more games than people expected. Geno Smith threw the ball really well.
21. Carolina Panthers 1-2
That's the Cam Newton we needed to see and what a performance by the defense. Now, will we see that again next week?
22. Arizona Cardinals 1-2
Not a great performance all around for the Cardinals. They have a chance to get back on track at Tampa this week.
23. St. Louis Rams 1-2
Rams fell behind early on the road again and there was no hope for them to catch up. Certainly not the way people thought the Rams would look/play early on this season.
24. Oakland Raiders 1-2
looks like he is going to make the Raiders offense fun. They just need
to have players who can help him. Tough to do that against a team like
25. Buffalo Bills 1-2
The Bills offensive line could not protect EJ Manuel.
The Jets defense was all over them. Of greater concern though,
defensive starters are dropping like flies. Lot of injury concerns for
26. Cleveland Browns 1-2
That was one impressive win for a team that everyone thought was just going to tank and wait for next year. Brian Hoyer was sensational.
27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 0-3
Bucs were not competitive against the Patriots. Have to start wondering when Josh Freeman loses the starting QB position.
28. Pittsburgh Steelers 0-3
Antonio Brown provided
a spark Sunday night, but five turnovers will kill any chance a bad
team has at winning a game. Right now, the Steelers are a bad team.
29. Washington Redskins 0-3
may be rusty to start the year, but that's no excuse for the defense
giving up over 1,400 yards in the games. They won't do much until that
30. New York Giants 0-3
No defense, no offense and injuries to the offensive line. Giants are in a world of hurt.
31. Minnesota Vikings 0-3
any team can lose to a third string quarterback, it's the Vikings.
They need to figure out how to correct what is hurting them or their
season is done.
32. Jacksonville Jaguars 0-3Jaguars appear to have some competition for the number one overall pick. Slight edge still to Jacksonville.
