Some teams are going to get in the tournament on names alone. I will use the same stats for each team-record, conference record, RPI, record v. RPI Top 50, losses to teams with sub-200 RPI, road-neutral record, SOS.
Team A
19-12, 9-7 conference record, 59 RPI, 0-6 v. Top 50, no losses to sub-200 RPI teams, 6-10 away from home, 52 SOS
Team B
20-12, 9-9 conference record, 51 RPI, 3-7 v. Top 50, 1 loss to sub-200 RPI teams, 8-9 away from home, 43 SOS
Who's the better team? Team B has more wins, but Team A is better in conference. Team B has a better RPI and is better against the Top 50. Team B has a terrible loss, however. Team B looks like the better team.
Team B is Villanova and Team A is Virginia Tech. I'd say that these are the two most interesting teams. They are both stuck on the bubble. It looks like Villanova would get the last spot if it comes down to these two.
Now, let's take a look at a team that is in and teams that supposedly have no chance to get in.
Team A
17-14, 11-7 conference record, 61 RPI, 5-7 v. Top 50, no losses to sub-200 RPI teams, 5-11 away from home, 12 SOS
Team B
24-8, 11-5 conference record, 58 RPI, 1-4 v. Top 50, no losses to sub-200 RPI teams, 8-6 away from home, 149 SOS
Team C
19-14, 8-10 conference record, 39 RPI, 5-8 v. Top 50, no losses to sub-200 RPI teams, 8-8 away from home, 2 SOS
Team D
17-15, 9-7 conference record, 73 RPI, 3-6 v. Top 50, one loss to a sub-200 RPI team, 8-11 away from home, 57 SOS
I will not give the names to these. I want to see who you think will be in the tourney out of these if there was one spot left and these four were competing against each other.

Arizona may be a tad overrated but they do have a SOS of 2, which is remarkable. Team B looks better than A until you see B's SOS, which hurts them tremendously.
However, if I had to pick two of those teams to make the tournament, it would be Teams B and C, which I now know are New Mexico and Arizona.

My order is B, A, C, D.
Arizona may have a tough strength of schedule, but as you can see by their record versus the Top 50, they aren't too good against the good teams. If you can't get to at least .500 in your conference, you are just an NIT team.
