Matt Ryan.

Top QB prospect?

In analyzing the upcoming draft, teams must not only draft for need, but also understand what salary requirements each player will have.  Which leads me to my point: is Matt Ryan a top QB prospect (or the top prospect of a weak class) and if he is, is he worth the estimated 60 million dollar salary (as compared to Jamarcus Russell last year).

Rather than using subjective criteria such as leadership, or personality I will use a statisitical comparison to past QB's taken in the first round.

QB Rating (pick #) (as found on ESPN)

Alex Smith (#1) - 176.52

Jason Campbell (#25) - 172.89

Philip Rivers (#4) - 170.49

Jamarcus Russell (#1) - 167.03

Ben Roethlisberger (#11) - 165.85

Vince Young (#3) - 163.95

Average top six draft position = 7.5

Matt Leinart (#10) - 157.94

Byron Leftwich (#8) - 156.51

Aaron Rodgers (#24) - 154.35

Brian Brohm (?) - 152.43

Carson Palmer (#1) - 149.08

Eli Manning (#1) - 148.09

Average of next five = 8.8

Brady Quinn (#22) - 146.65

J.P. Losman (#22) - 139.89

Kyle Boller (#19) - 126.80

Matt Ryan (?) - 127.04

Jay Cutler (#11) - 126.07

Rex Grossman (#22) - 121.54

Average of last five = 18.6

Of the 18 either first found picks (or potential) Matt Ryan is third worst.

I only sampled 1st round picks because Matt Ryan is being regarded as a 1st round pick and system QB's can be rated extremely high (see Colt Brennan).

Also it is important to note that these are the last year spent in college QB ratings, but Matt Ryan had a rating of 126.38 in 2006.

Is the New England (ie ESPN) hype-machine in full force with the promotion of Matt Ryan?

Only time can tell, but at least in the case of QB rating, Matt Ryan does not compare favorably with former 1st round QB's

QB Rating has nothing to with projecting how well you will be as a NFL QB

I am not saying it does, but I am using it to compare Ryan to past QB
