NFL Picks, Predictions and Fantasy Football Notes: AFC South

You and I both know that NFL football is the greatest sport on the planet. Hell, neither one of us would be sitting here talking about it in the middle of March if it wasn’t right?

Now speaking of the best, today I’d like to share my thoughts with you on what is arguably one of the best - if not the best - division in football; the AFC South. Need proof? Look no further than last years playoffs. Three teams made the tourney. Top to bottom, this division should be about as competitive as it gets in 2008.

How does it stack up? Lets take a look.

2008 AFC North Final Standings:

1) Jacksonville Jaguars

2) Indianapolis Colts

3) Tennessee Titans

4) Houston Texans

Stop by by my fantasy football blog to read the reasons for my picks and a few fantasy football notes.

I agree with your opinion of this division. Underrated to say the least. Being from the east coast we get Jets/Dolphins/Pats to death. Good to get some much needed perspective.

btw, the hyperlinking is working terrific. I checked out your fantasy blog and bookmarked it. I'll be participating in my first "high stakes" league next season, so I plan to refer to it quite often. I encourage everyone reading this comment to check out FF's fantasy link in his post. He's the best!

I think that you are a little off on your prediction of where the Texans will
Finish this year . They will with out a doubt finish no lower than third ahead of the Titans and I think it is possible they could be 2nd . Either way I see them in the play offs in 2008 and would have been this year if not for some unfortunate injuries (one stat we led the league in I don't want to repeat ) . This we are going to be younger and faster mar k my word coach ku's first season 6-10 2nd 8-8 3rd will be 10-6 and the playoffs

Im gonna have to put colts first

The Colts dont loose in the regular season, they have been a dynasty for the past 5-6 years when it comes to the reular season lol. Colts are def. number 1 in the South man.

Report Offensive Comment

Umm yah dude the Colts dont lose in the regular season, they are a dynasty in that sense lol. Colts are the best team in the South,( especially next season with Harrison and Freeney back) and I highly doubt that will change as long as Peyton Manning is still in the game

Holy smokes look at all the comments. Thanks everyone.

thanks for the nice words RU and Kobe.

Wow, TexanDave making the call on the Texans in the playoffs. Kinda hope you're right, you guys could use a little positivity.

Jeevs BS and Sam...hard to argue with either of you. This division is pretty much a coin flip.

Colts
Jaguars
Texans
Titans

That is who I'm going with.

1. Jags
2. Colts
3. Texans
4. Titans
This is the Jags year! The fact that they've made some great offseason moves coupled with the fact that theres a buzz around the league that Dwight freeny will never be the same following his foot injury is the reason why the Jags will win this division. Dont get me wrong Bob sanders is a great player but the pressure that Freeny is able to genetare off the EDGE is that makes that Tampa 2 defense work!!

Alright thats two people with the Titans in last...not a lot of faith in Vince I take it.

Thanks for the comments guys. Good point on Freeney Sugardaddy (a wait and see at the very least).

Nice list. Also, don't forget that Harrison is coming off a bad injury and will be 36 years old when the season starts. There were rumors he would retire in the offseason.

The Jags will probably split with the Colts next season. The Jags only finished 2 games behind the Colts in 07, and if Garrard had stayed healthy for their home game the Jags would have had a shot to win. Instead Quinn Gray came in, the offense suddenly was afraid to throw the ball, and the Colts ended up winning in a route.

The Jags are definately stronger than last season, and the only thing I'm concerned about is defensive end. However, Reggie Hayward will be a year healthier, and that could buy the Jags time to find their stud de.

1.COLTS
2.JAGS/TITANS
3.TITANS/JAGS
4.TEXANS
The colts didnt lose much this year, matter fact they only lost one starter wich will hurt them a little unless backups or draft picks play like charlie johnson (undrafted) who was affective when they lost "booger" mcfarland.oh yea and they still have the best and most important to his team defensive player in the league,i dont even have to say his name and you know who im talking about.
The jags i think lost more then what they gained, they gain a mediocre wide receiver and lost a great defensive tackle,i think they could even sink to 4th in this division because its so strong, dont get me wrong though the jags and the colts are still the only teams in this division that can win a super bowl next year.
The titans are a fun team to watch because they can play with just about everybody and also they have vince young who i think can lead this team to the super bowl BUT not anytime soon.
The texans are an underrated team that when they are healthy can play with everybody but if they get hit with the injury bug again the season should be over for them because they have no depth.

Titans: Simply put these guys will probaly finish last becasue their front office did a horrible job in letting almost theyre whole defensive line hit free agency at the same time! the titans have lost 2 DE's and a DT on a defense that was the anchor for that team. Lets not confuse things the past 2 years the Titans won games despite the play of Vince Young! That defense always kept them in the game only for Vince to get the Glory! The DL was the heart and soul of that team! and im not sure they can be as good as last year. Not to mention they need a reciever to hld on to the ball!
Jaguars: The Jaguars made some great offseason moves with the addition of Florence and Porter (look for Jerry Porter to have a breakout year next season behind that great running game!) after all we see what former Raiders do when the leave the team Charles Woodson, Randy Moss. need i say more. The loss of Stroud isnt going to hurt them because of a guy named ROB MEIER.! He has filled in for Stroud the past two seasons and actually played better than Stroud! Believe it or not the Jags defensive rankings have actually gotten better when stroud got injured. Sttrouds ankle will never be the same. And the Jags knew that. The whole wild card for this team is actually goin to be someone noone is talking about. Gregg Williams!! Tell me what great DE he had while with the redskins...... none! he was great at generating pressure off blitzing. that's the wild-card whether or not he can teach the Jags linebackers who arent used to blitzing how to biltz (timing is key).
Colts: theses guys are getting older and older. Anothony Gonzoles is no Marvin Harrison! His knee isnt ever gonna get back to All-Pro form! I doubt it last the season. Freeny is the Wild Card for these guys. If he can still pressure the QB like he has in years past they will be jus fine!! but you usually see guys loose a step when coming off that type of foot injury.
Texans: Just way to inconsistant. but theyre getting better! it seems they only really get up to play the Jags.

YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE!!

P.S. The last 8 games of the season Jags offence finished 2nd in the league in scoring on behind the Pats! Watch out for that offence!

Report Offensive Comment

it doesnt matter what you do in the last 8 games,it matters what you do all season and thats why the colts will win the division.the jags gained florence who by the way is known for getting burned and porter, marvin harrison is better on one knee then porter is when hes healthy.anthony gonzales is no marvin harrison but he is way better then any of the jags receivers and i didnt even mention reggie wayne. dwight freeney and robert mathis is a way better combination then some no names on the jags,oh yea did i mention the colts still have the best defensive player,no if ands about it. id rather take an old old team like the colts over the jags and besides the colts are great at finding good players in the draft most of their roster are the colts own draft picks. BILL POLLIAN IS A GENIUS

Report Offensive Comment

I totally dis agree with u!!! Its more inportant to have a strong finish to season then it is to have a great start perfect exaple the superbowl champion giants! slow start but strong finish. the chargers slow start but strong finish (beating your colts). The Detroit Lions. great start but horrible finish. As long as u win at least 3 - 4 of your fist eight games and really pick it up on the last 8 games and r playing your best football of the season. you can make some serious noise in the playoffs! In a 100 meter race it doesnt matter who wins the first 50m its all about the last 50!!!

Thats funny how people are saying the Colts are old when they were the 2nd youngest team in the NFL last season. The Colts will be one of the youngest teams again this coming season, because there be some rookies taking the place of the veterans the Colts released or didn't bother to sign this offseason.

Report Offensive Comment

You guys know your stuff. I don't think that it is a question of the Colts being old all over, just in certain key spots. They will be tough regardless.

Either way, this is a great discussion. Thats for all of the comments.

"The Colts are the 2nd youngest team in the NFL..."

Quarterback: over 30
RB: Young there and decent depth
WR: 2 over 30 wide receivers, 1 potential replacement
TE: 1 in his prime
OL: Starting to creep up in age (except for LT)
DL: DE's are getting banged up at the end of each year, little presence at DT
LBs: Very, very bare. No depth.
DBs: Fairly Young.

Face it: every team has periods where one side of the ball carries the other. In a few more years the Colts defense will have to carry the offense while it rebuilds the skill positions and part of the line. If the NFL goes to being uncapped that shouldn't be a problem. However, if the cap stays in place the Colts are looking at a tough future.
