There is a flaw in the NFL's new overtime rule. The new rule is supposed to make overtime more fair for the team that doesn't get the ball first. But in the end, what the rule really is going to do is create more ties than we've been used to in the last few years. Obviously, the statistics aren't there yet to bear this out, but my gut feeling tells me unless this rule is changed, soon we are going to see a 2 tie team, just like Minnesota almost was last week. The reason is - a typical long drive down the field can easily take 6 minutes or so. Say a team drives down and only gets a field goal - the opponent now gets a shot at the ball. The opposing team launches a long drive of their own, and they chew up another 6 minutes or so and only get a field goal also. Now we have a tie game, and just 3 minutes or so left in the overtime. Defenses tighten up, and just like the Vikings/Packers game you have a tie. Unless they decided to modify this rule somehow (maybe make the overtime period longer?) we are going to see more and more games end in ties in the years to come.

The soccer fans of the United States really bother me. Not because it is just soccer, I happen to appreciate the sport even if I don't fully understand it. No, what annoys me about them is their victim mentality against the rest of the world. I used to play along, it seemed always the calls went against the US, the world was out to get us because, well, we are the USA. We're better in everything else in the world, so there is no way the rest of the world is going to let us be good at the one thing they have left over us - soccer. But you know what? Get over it USA. The US is currently whining and crying over being put in a so-called "Group of Death" in the 2014 World Cup. I say if we aren't good enough to be one of the top two teams in our group of 4, why would it matter if we don't advance to the second round? Advance to the next round for what? To lose? What good is that? The USMNT is a good squad this year. In my opinion, the time for calling it a success just by getting to the 2nd round in the WC is over. We need to be the best in this sport. We need to beat the best. Go USMNT! Let's beat those Euro-queens at their own game!

The baseball offseason is in full swing, if you haven't noticed lately, and I've got to say it still kind of awes me the amount of money that gets thrown around so easily. Remember, baseball contracts, like NBA contracts, are all guaranteed. There's no phony number, backloaded, team-friendly cap workable contracts like what happens in the NFL. Even the NBA, where the average bench dweller is a millionaire, at least there is a structure (unless you're the last of the ones grandfathered in, Kobe) that falls neatly so that Lebron makes no more than Chris Bosh, and slightly less than Pau Gasol does. (it's true, look it up). But the numbers that happen in baseball - boggle the mind. I know they play more games, but it still hard to imagine that there is so much money that teams can pay a player like Robinson Cano - not quite a marketable superstar - $240 million over the next 10 years. I guess that's why I'm not a MLB accountant...

Thank goodness we're going to have the correct matchup in the National Championship Game in this the final year of the BCS. It was close, if not for Michigan State being that rare college football team that actually plays defense, the Auburn Tigers would not have the chance to compete for that title. Who will win between Florida State and Auburn? I don't know, I'm not an expert on college football. I'm just glad we get the matchup that we want to see. I wonder how loudly those Auburn players were cheering for MSU tonight?

In case you missed it, the Grammy nominations came out this past week. Oh yes, they did an elaborate production out of the nominees, I didn't watch it and you didn't watch it either probably. I can't stand the Grammy's. Even when I was younger and much more interested in music, the Grammy's seemed to be the farthest thing from the actual best music of the year. They still are. That little weirdo Bruno Mars got a lot of nominations. He is actually going to be the artist performing at the Super Bowl this year. Never heard of him? Consider yourself lucky, that is until you're forced to mute the sound in February during the NFL's biggest day of the year.

Germany has petitioned the UN for their beer purity law to be included on UNESCO's "intangible cultural heritage" list, a list which recognizes practices that require "urgent measures to keep them alive". Those silly Krauts. They think they own the best beers. You know what? We make better beer than they do. This all loops back to the World Cup too. You see, Germany is in our group. So not only is the USMNT playing for the pride of soccer, but they are playing for the pride of our beer! So just wait until this summer, stupid arrogant Euros, we're better than you at beer, and we're better than you at soccer. We're better than you at everything. USA! USA! USA!

Have fun and as always drink good beer. Drink good AMERICAN beer too.

That bar isn't set as high as it once was.
