The preseason Barnstorming tour continues as 15 of the 16 National League teams host legendary teams; Houston Astros will play on the American League schedule. In addition, the make-up game between the Texas Rangers Legends v. Kansas City Royals will be played today. The MLB Tonight recaps for today's games are:
New York Mets Legends @ Arizona Diamondbacks
With two big game pitchers going at it, this game stayed tied all the way into the eighth inning when Mike Piazza hit a two-out, two-run double scoring Jeff Kent and . That was all Pedro Martinez needed as he went eight strong innings, recording 13 strikeouts and leaving the ninth for closer John Franco who recorded a 1-2-3 save. The Mets Legends won 2-0.
Philadelphia Phillies Legends @ Atlanta Braves
This game was a slugfest for the Phillies Legends as Mike Schmidt, Al Simmons and Billy Hamilton all went deep leaving plenty of run support for Eddie Plank who went eight strong innings allowing no runs and striking out eight. The Phillies Legends won 12-0.
Pittsburgh Pirates Legends @ Chicago Cubs
Carlos Zambrano had no chance versus this powerful lineup and he did himself no favors by walking eight batters in six innings, allowing 13 earned runs. Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell each drove in four RBI and Josh Gibson added a three-run homer to lead the way for the powerful Pirates Legends team as they won 14-0.
San Diego Padres Legends @ Cincinnati Red
This was a close game that was well pitched by both Paul Wilson of the Reds and Randy Jones of the Padres Legends. Tony Gwynn hit a go-ahead RBI single between shortstop and third base with one out in the sixth which proved to be the winning run. The Padres Legends won 3-2.
San Francisco Giants Legends @ Colorado Rockies
Barry Bonds and Willie Mays each hit a homerun and combined for eight RBI to power the Giants Legends past the Rockies and give starter Carl Hubbell plenty of run support as he struck out nine through eight innings and only allowed a two-run homerun to Todd Helton in the fourth. The Giants Legends won 10-2.
St. Louis Cardinals Legends @ Florida Marlins
Dizzy Dean had the young Marlins club spinning as he twirled a three-hit shutout racking up nine strikeouts. Stan Musial led the way on offense for the Cards Legends driving in three runs on a three-for-four day at the plate. The Cardinals Legends won 5-0.
Washington Nationals Legends @ Los Angeles Dodgers
Brad Penny kept the Dodgers in this game, holding the Nationals Legends to three runs through eight innings, but they could not muster any offense off Early Wynn. The big blow of the game came in the sixth when Gary Carter cleared the bases with a three-run double with two-outs off Penny. The Nationals Legends won 3-0.
Baltimore Orioles Legends @ Milwaukee Brewers
Robin Roberts held the Brew Crew to two hits in eight innings. Chris Capuano was also impressive going seven strong only allowing a solo shot to Cal Ripken Jr. which proved to be the only run of this game. The Orioles Legends won 1-0.
Boston Red Sox Legends @ New York Mets
Steve Trachsel pitched well and the Mets offense scored off Kid Nichols as David Wright hit a three-run homerun scoring Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado. The Mets Bullpen would go on to blow the game however after Duaner Sanchez gave up homeruns to Jimmie Fox and Carlton Fisk giving the Red Sox the lead in the eighth. The Mets were unable to tie the game up against Rick Aguilera in the ninth as the Red Sox Legends won 8-7.
Chicago White Sox Legends @ Philadelphia Phillies
Ted Lyons went seven strong innings for the White Sox Legends as the offense was powered by Frank Thomas who drove in all four runs for the White Sox Legends; while Ryan Howard hit a two-run homerun for the Phillies only runs of the game off Lyons. The White Sox Legends won 4-2.
Cleveland Indians Legends @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Kip Wells was pounded by the Indians Legends, led by Manny Ramirez's five-for-five effort and four RBI and Tris Speaker going three-for-four with two homeruns and three RBI. That was all the runs needed for Addie Joss who went all nine innings allowing just two runs and striking out seven. The Indians Legends won 9-2.
Detroit Tigers Legends @ San Diego Padres
Hank Greenberg drove in Ty Cobb four times in this game paving the way for an easy win for the Tigers Legends behind a strong pitching performance by Billy Pierce who recorded the complete game shutout. Ty Cobb also stole two bases during this game. The Tigers Legends won 5-0.
Houston Astros Legends @ San Francisco Giants
Matt Morris of the Giants matched Eddie Cicotte of the Astros Legends for much of the game. In the eight, Morris gave up a crucial RBI double to Jeff Bagwell scoring Craig Biggio to break the 0-0 tie. Cicotte didn't allow the Giants to score in the bottom half of the inning and went on to pitch a complete game shutout. The Astros Legends won 1-0.
Kansas City Royals Legends @ St. Louis Cardinals
Bob Lemon was unhittable for the Royals Legends. Lemon was nearly perfect striking out ten and only allowing one base runner when he gave up a single to Albert Pujols. George Brett had three hits an two RBI leading the way for the Royals Legends offense as they won 4-0.
Los Angeles Angels Legends @ Washington Nationals
Rod Carew and Vlad Guerrero led the way for the Angels Legends, each collecting four hits and driving in a combined four runs. Fernando Valenzuela went eight strong while striking out 12 and giving up just two runs. The Angels Legends won 5-2.
Texas Rangers Legends @ Kansas City Royals (Make-Up)Arod and Irod led the way for the Rangers Legends providing plenty of run support for Smokey Joe Williams who pitched a complete game shutout. Arod had two hits including a three-run homerun, while Ivan Rodriquez went four-for-five with three doubles and four RBI. The Rangers Legends won 9-0.
