All Out Blitz - Winners and Losers in Free Agency
By George Kurtz, The Fantasy Sports Forum.com
With the free agency period now in its third week, and the draft about a month away, it's time to take a look at the winners and losers so far from this off-season.
Winners
New York Jets
The Jets have acquired defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, guard Alan Faneca, linebacker Calvin Pace, offensive lineman Damien Woody, cornerback Andre Woolfork, fullback Tony Richardson, and running back Jesse Chatman. This has been a tremendous off-season so far. Getting Faneca will solidify their offensive line allowing Thomas Jones or dare I say, Darren McFadden, room to run, and allow either Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens time to throw. Calvin Pace adds a playmaker to the linebacking corps which is badly needed after Jonathan Vilma was traded to New Orleans. Jesse Chatman gives the Jets depth at running back, and Tony Richardson still has some miles left as a blocker. In addition, the Jets have the sixth pick in the 2008 NFL draft and there is a shot that McFadden could still be there, staring at them in the face. That could be one hell of a coup for the Jets to add a much needed playmaker, as they're clearly trying to put the 2007 season behind them. Question is, can Pennington or Clemens take the Jets to the next step?
Cleveland Browns
The first thing the Browns did was sign Derek Anderson to a three year contract. Anderson came into his own last season and showed signs that he could be a franchise quarterback. I know the Browns also have Brady Quinn, but this signing gives Quinn plenty of time to get adjusted to the NFL, and it also gives the Browns one hell of a trading chip should they decide to go that route. The Browns have plenty of offense, but they still decided to give Anderson another weapon when they signed wide receiver Donte Stallworth to a seven year contract. Stallworth will give the Browns the deep threat they were lacking last season. The Browns also signed safety Nick Sorensen, offensive lineman Rex Hadnot and Lennie Friedman, defensive back Gary Baxter, and fullback Charles Ali. They also traded for center Chris Myers. All of these moved added depth to an already improving team, who will be no fun for opponents to play next season.
