Chad Johnson and Pacman Jones, Cowboys Draft Needs

If i were Dallas I would make an attempt to land both of these players.  For Chad Johnson I would offer Cinci our 2009 first round pick and Akin Adoyele.  This would reunite Akin Adoyele with Mike Zimmer and would give the Bengals a blue collar linebacker with 3-4 experience.  That would give the Bengals Adoyele and Thurman in the middle of their D which would be a good start to rebuliding their defense as long as Thurman can stay out of trouble.  With their 4th round pick the Bengals could address other needs as well as ridding themselves of Chad Johnson.  With Johnson no longer in Cinci, they would have the cap room to resign TJ Houzmanzadeh, who is looking for a new deal. They also have Chris Henry, who is a good no. 2 WR, so Carson Palmer would still have to solid weapons to throw to.

For Pacman, I would offer Tennesee a 5th round pick and nothing more for Pacman. In my opinion, Pacman has too many legal problems to give up more than a 5th round pick for him.  After trading for Pacman, the Cowboys will need to restucture some contracts to be able to  fund their draft.  Their are several ways they could do this.  First of all, the Cowboys would release Terry Glenn.  While Terry has had some good years for the Cowboys, keeping a 34 year old WR who is having serious knee problems is not a good idea.  After Glenn is released, the Cowboys should restructure the contracts of Chad Johnson and Terrel Owens.  While many think TO and Ocho Cinco wont get along, Drew Rosenhaus is both of their agents, so he would be the peacemaker.  Add that to the fact that TO is getting older and that his SB chances are less and less each year, I think he will be willing to restructure his contract if it means getting a ring.  Chad Johnson would be a little harder to renogotiate with, but I think he wants a ring bad enough to take Market Value instead of going to a team that can give him tons of money but has no weapons around him.  After this has been done, i think Dallas will have the room to fund their draft.

Dallas has two first round selections this year.  At no. 22 I would take Miami S Kenny Phillips with pick no. 22.  His rookie year Phillips would put some pressure on Roy Williams to perform better this upcoming season.  If Roy somehow does manage to bring his game back up to true probowl level, Kenny Phillips would just play special teams his first year and then replace Ken Hamlin at FS.  But the more likely scenario is for Phillips to sit a year and the take over for Roy Williams after his first year.  With Williams gone, that would give Dallas cap room to negotiate a new deal with Ken Hamlin.  For pick no. 28, I would trade down with the Ravens.  The Ravens would recieve pick no. 28 and our third round selection.  In return Dallas would recieve the Ravens 2008 second round pick and their 2009 first rounder.  With Dallas now picking in the second round, I would take RB Chris Johnson from East Carolina.  He would give Dallas the speed back needed to complement Barber plus he is a very good reciever out of teh backfield and a good kick returner.  Whlie Chris Johnson will most likely never be able to carry the load by himself, that is ok because he would be splitting time with Barber.  With Dallas' second second round pick I would select CB Tyvon Branch from UCONN.  While he needs some work to be a truly reliable corner, that is ok because his rookie year  he will only have to play the dime CB position.  He would also give Dallas some depth, because he is able to play safety as well.  He would also be able to make a big impact on special teams, where he would potentially be a faster version of Keith Davis at the very least.  With no 3rd,4th, or 5th round pick I will move on to the 6th round to where we swapped picks with the Dolphins in the Jason Ferguson deal.  With our 6th round selection I would select ILB J Leman to help out on special teams and take Akin Adoyele's spot on the roster.  While Leman has little to no upside, he will stay out of trouble and you can count on him to come in and work his tail off every day.  With our 7th round pick, I would select Cameron Colvin from Oregon.  Many of you probably read the SI article about him and how he was ranked higher than Calvin Johnson coming out of highschool, but his career has been derailed by injuries.  This pick is somewhat of a gamble, if Colvin could get healthy sometime and return to his old form, he could be a solid reciever for the Cowboys in 2-3 years.

After the draft, the only question is who will play ILB next to Bradie James.  Bobby Carpenter and Zach Thomas would compete for this job, along with nickel backer Kevin Burnett.  While Carpenter may seem like somewhat oof a bust so far in his pro career, he has  done a solid job when he has had the chance and his biggest problem seems to be getting on the field.  If Carpenter fails, Dallas would still have Thomas and Burnett to look at for ILB.  I doubt Burnett would even compete for this job, due to his size, but he he could somehow make the transition he could become a playmaker.  At the very least, Burnett will be one of the nickel backers next year.  If neither of those two guys can win the job at ILB, Dallas at least has Zach Thomas to plug in there if all else fails.

Here is what my basic depth Chart  would look like after the Draft:

QB: Tony Romo, Brad Johnson

RB: Marion Barber, Chris Johnson, Tyson Thompson

FB: Deon Anderson

LT: Flozell Adams, Doug Free

LG: Kyle Kosier, Pat McQuistan

C: Andre Gurode, Cory Procter

RG:  Lenoard Davis, Joe Berger

RT: Marc Colombo, James Marten

TE: Jason Witten, Anthony Fasano,

WR:Terrel Owens, Chad Johson, Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Isiah Stanback, Sam Hurd, Cameron Colvin

RDE:Chris Canty,Stephen Bowen

NT: Jay Ratliff, Tank Johnson

LDE: Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher

LOLB:Greg Ellis, Anthony Spencer

ILB:Bradie James, Bobby Carpenter, Zach Thomas, J Leman

ROLB:DeMarcus Ware, Kevin Burnett

CB:Terrance Newman, Anthony Henry, Pacman Jones, Tyvone Branch

FS:Ken Hamlin, Pat Watkins

SS:Roy Williams, Kenny Phillips

K:Nick Folk

P:Mat McBriar

With this roster I think Dallas could beat anybody and would out them in a good positon to be succesful in 2008.  One thing that must change for Dallas to win is for Tony Romo to not throw as many INTs as he did last year.  If that improves, I think Dallas would have to be the favorite to represent the NFC in the SB.

I like how you figured out getting TO and Johnson on the field together, but after giving Crayton a new contract I don't think the 'Boys are in the market for another high priced receiver. They got two first round picks that could easily be used on corner or wide receiver and either would cost much less than Johnson or Pacman. I say they should do the Pacman trade though, only because I really think there is little risk involved. He would have to restructure his contract to allow for legal indescretions and that would give Dallas some security in making the trade. I would go as far as to give up a fourth round pick for him. Cincy will not give up Johnson for a fourth rounder and Ayodele. Johnson, disgruntled or not, is worth much more than that and I could see other teams taking the "Patriot approach" (Moss) and making a deal they would feel could take them over the top.

As for the draft, corner, running back and receiver are musts along with depth at safety and offensive line. A veteran safety will get cut in the summer and could be a viable replacement for Davis. If Romo continues to progress, the offensive line stays healthy, JJ's replacement provides enough balance with Barber, Tank stays out of trouble and the secondary plays (at least) marginally better than Dallas should be considered THE favorite as the NFC rep in the SB.

You made some good points in you Blog , but I think we need a more proven running back. Yhe first time I really ever heard of was when he ran that mid 4.2 40 at the combine. Theat roster was tight also but I think they would start Zach over Bobby.

DRUDOG you are right about the Bengals not doing that trade, but if I were Dallas I wouldnt give up more than that for Johnson.

What do you guys think of the trade with the Ravens? I could see JJ doing something like that?

I could see the "Boys moving out of the first round with one of those picks, but it all boils down to who would want to move up and what will they get out of it. I'm sure we can all agree that when they traded with the Browns we all expected a top 10 pick. I was rooting against them all season and normally I couldn't care less about the Browns. If they could get an additional one next year, swap to that teams second rounder plus another pick later this year I'd say do it. I don't think there is a large drop-off from late first to early second round in this year's draft.

Also, I like your take on the depth chart. You took the time to put that together and it's definitely a solid line-up.

Liked your blog, and we do have plenty of depth at LB to work a trade in there, but we got some important free agents coming up next year like; Terrance Newman, Tank Johnson, Ken Hamlin and TO, and the Barbarian still needs to get signed long term. I didn't think Crayton was worth the extension and nobody even knows if Pac Man is going to get reinstated this coming year - Goodell might just give him another year to think about his actions before letting him back on the field (and as much as I don't want a bad apple on the team, Pac Man could come cheap enough to warrant the risk). Personally I'd love to see the Boys pick up WR Limas Swede in the draft, grab another CB with the 28th pick and a RB in the 2nd round (I agree with you about Felix Jones/RB/Arkansas being a good selection). I'm not a GM, but I do know we have a young team, and usually it takes a tough loss the previous year to bring a young team to maturation. I think Tony Romo and Big D will be just fine this year, no matter what, but we do have some cap issues to work through (the high price of having 13 pro bowlers on the squad). Once again though, loved the blog.

I like your thinking but i doubt that Cincy would give up Chad for a 4th and Akin Ayodele, it will probably take one of our 1st round picks and possibly Akin if other teams start competing for 85. With our draft situation, if we do get Pacman I still think we should draft another corner in the 1st round too, in case it doesn't work out and if it does the drafted corner can play in the nickel package, and Anthony Henry can make the move to safety which would allow him to cover athletic tight ends which Roy Williams unfortunately cannot do. I also love Chris Johnson and the idea of trading up in the 2nd round because he will definitely not be there at pick 28. He is very versatile and we could have a rushing attack similar to the Saints with Bush and McAllister. Cameron Colvin is a very intriguing prospect too as well is Chaz Schilens from San Diego St. who is 6'4'' around 200lbs. and runs low 4.4s high 4.3s. Really good blog!

Good thoughts, but Felix Jones will be the left hand jab to Barber's right hand hook. Tony Romo will end his career as the greatest Cowboy Q.B. in franchise history with 4 super Bowl rings and this season is only going to be the tip of what we are going to see as far as talent and excitement for the next decade of Cowboys football. Adam Jones with the help of the Cowboys orginazation will make an outstanding turn towards success professionaly and personally. We "Cowboy Nation" are on the cusp of the greatest franchise run in NFL history. Happy Easter and God bless!!
