NCAA Basketball Tourney - A discussion!

They don't need to do any extra work to hype it if it's really that good.  For the record I think MOST of sports is overhyped.  Super Bowl and NCAA Tourney Time being the biggest culprits.  If you go back 5 years, you'll see what I mean... the Tourney was still great for BBall fans, but there was less of the 24/7 crush.  It's not the Tourney itself that ultimately is to blame, but this insane news cycle that doesn't end.

This level of information is simply unnecessary and invasive, but I fully expect most people to disagree with me.  I don't expect my opinions to be agree'd with, but I also don't expect to agree with yours.  And most importantly, declaring something the 'BEST' is pure opinion, just as an FYI.  I consider the NCAA the worst because it completely erases anything else in it's wake.  As the post above indicates, I'm excited for the Hockey tourney, but that gets zero coverage - I know, it's not a draw, but I happen to think it -SHOULD- be.

The real culprit here is that everyone is chasing the buck, and in a NEWS aspect, it should be about covering everything, not maximizing profit.  I understand everyone is a business, but it's that very fact that bothers me - report on all things equally, as an impartial reporting service should - and THEN add extra content for the big sellers if you're worried about your profit margin.

Of course, I fully expect that this kind of opinion will be frowned upon, but I'm not worried about that.  It's my opinion, and I'll stick by it.

As always, if you're going to comment, make it constructive.

I have to admit that I don't follow Hockey. You are correct that Most of the coverage is about NCAA right now, even more then the NBA, which is about to start their playoffs in a few weeks. If the Hockey tourney is about the same time as the NBA playoffs, once again it may not get the same coverage. I realize there are a huge amount of Hockey fans and their should get their due.

Gir,

I agree completely. I like what Bob Knight told 'em when he went to work on TV. His first condition was that he not have to wear a suit and tie. Reasoning: It's sports, not the Supreme Court.

Thought of you today when reading an article about how to improve the too-long Nascar season. The writer totally dissed hockey. I could just hear you ranting.

Hope your well.

I'm doing just fine, good to see you poking your head in.

I'm having a hard time equating NASCARs season to being too long, does he know that there are several weekends within the schedule that they don't race? I think it's very well designed.

You're right, Gir. It's all about the money. With sports channels running 24/7, they have a lot of airtime to fill around the commercials, and they're going to maximize their opportunity for viewership now and in the future. Hype the NCAA now, and they can hype the kids, the draft and the NBA next year.

I think the whole 24/7 thing is just crazy. But more... I just have this feeling that they're losing sight of the REPORTING aspect of what they're supposed to do. I mean, an amateur boxer dies in Atlanta and nothing is mentioned that I see. The NCAA Hockey finals (As referenced in my last blog post) are set and bupkis. I'm perfectly aware that these are not on the same tier as the NCAA Basketball Tourneys... but does that mean they deserve NO mention? I don't think it's right to ignore it entirely.

Gir - It is unfortunately all about the money.

FGB - It is, yes, what I'm mainly saying is that it shouldn't be. Not entirely... the death of an athlete is almost entirely ignored? Really?

Report Offensive Comment

I know. With the NCAA it is all about revenue generation. Unfortunately football and basketball (men's and only a few women's teams) are the revenue generating sports. Baseball, hockey, tennis, softball, volleyball, swimming, track and field, etc.; all are considered non-revenue generating sports for the majority of the NCAA schools.

Even the UT women's sports are subsidized by the football program. Only basketball makes any money and without the football money it would probably be in the negative.

The death of any person is sad. The problem is complicated by scandalous reporting and instant news. I would guess that if he was a professional there would have been more news on the situation.

Report Offensive Comment

The problem with the reporting on the death as I see it was that the athlete in question was not a celebrity. We, as a nation, place way to much inmportance on celebrity than we do actual talent. For the most part, our athletes who are famous reside in football and basketball and therefore garner more of the medias attention. I can completely agree with your feelings towards the constant beating that is the NCAA Finals, World Series, Superbowl, ect. It seems like the only time some of the "lessor" sports get any mention is when something spectacular happens and even then it only lasts until the next Tony Romo/Jessica Simpson sighting. It is not only that way with sports but with the news media entirely. Important stuff falls to the wayside in the wake of sensationalism far to often. Thanks ofr the space to vent.

That's what this space is basically all about T-dad, pity your avatar by the way, but you are quite right... if I took another step back and looked at the media as a whole, it's the same problem everywhere.

But again, the problem is driven by the consumer, if people stopped WATCHING the crap, it'd stop being made. Kinda sad really. =P

The problem theree Gir, is the lack of options. Virtually all media is now living in a paparazzi led, celebrity obsessed, 24/7, chase the ratings and therefor the money, never mind the quality feel the width environment. Everywhere you look we are bombarded with incessent information and it's all about being first. All the networks are pretty much identikit these days, switch off the TV and radio is going the same way.......the internet? It started all this....short of moving to a cave it's inescapable...
