Nothing Shocking...Shockey to remain True Blue

Again Peter King is reporting that Sean Payton and the Saints are not done trying to pry Jeremy Shockey away from the World Champion New York Giants.  This time, it's been reported on profootballtalk.com that the offer is for the Saints Harper and a second round pick (40) in the upcoming draft.

That's a weak, low-ball offer.  Maybe Mickey Loomis has Jerry Reese confused with Mike Tennenbaum of the Jets? The Giants are not in the business of giving pro-bowlers away like the Jets and will change their system to accomodate talent.

Look for Shockey to be split-out as he was during Jim Fassel's tenure with Boss running routes out of the traditional TE position.

Reese knows that even a Super Bowl win would fail to spare him the fans wrath if he were to trade away the perennial fan favorite Shockey.  Shockey has suffered and endured all the while carrying Big Blue Nation on his 8-0 back.

I was deeply moved and inspired by the account of Ernie Accorsi in the book "The GM."  Ernie recounted a story in which he was visiting with Jeremy in Oklahoma before draft day.  Jeremy took him to his favorite BBQ pit and ate twice as much as the over-stuffed Ernie.  Finally Ernie mustered up the courage to ask him, "Why do you want to be a Giant?"

"I want it all.  The Giants symbolize America to me.  The Blue, Red & White.  That's me.  The Bengals...that's not me."

To many of us here in New York who are Giants fans, Jeremy symbolizes us.  Tough as nails, passionate, screaming for the ball just like we scream at the television.  A defender playing on offense, steam rolling would-be tacklers.  Celebrating a first down and getting the crowd riled up...that's Giants football.

In Michael Strahan's book, Mike said that the craziest fight he has ever seen was Brandon Short and Jeremy Shockey during the now infamous rookie hazing fight in the Albany cafeteria.

He needs to change some of his ways though, especially towards Eli.  He can do it, Plax did.  He is a better blocker now and shouldn't be traded for being the outspoken player we have come to expect and respect.

So go ahead and raise tickets while the Championship banner is being raised, just don't let the Saints and Mr. Trick Play with the game on the line Sean Payton think they can rook another New York team of it's heart and soul.

Shockey leaving or staying will make zero difference to the Giants, the Saints, or whoever. Shockey isnt a game changing TE like Gonzalez and Gates.

to all those who try to compare Shockey to Gates, Gonzales or Witten, you don't understand football. Shockey is hands down the best blocking TE in the NFL. Dont judge him on his receiving stats. He is the heart of G-Men and more passionate than 99 percent of players in the league. His die-hard game style is often misunderstood for being selfish and hot headed. The media love to bash him for what he's not, but don't worry, true Giants fans know him for what he is, and he will be our starting TE next season, coupled with a young Kevin Boss to be a great combined threat.

Career GM GS REC YDS Y/R TD LNG R/G Y/G
Shockey 83 82 371 4228 11.4 27 59 4.5 50.9
Gonzalez 174 158 820 9882 12.1 66 73 4.7 56.8
Gates 77 73 340 4362 12.8 43 72 4.4 56.6

Shockey has played half the games Gonzalez has and has put up half the numbers. Gates has better numbers. Both Gates and Gonzalez have played their carrers without a marquee reciever and a more of a focal point. Shockey is the better blocker.

sacked makes a good point, do you see what some "average" TEs like Eric Johnson get when they're the main receiver? Shockey has never been the main receiver of the Giants offense, if he was his #'s would reach the 80-90+ catch range. But then again I kind of worry how his body would hold up if he was catching that many passes.

Just glad we haven't picked him up since we are in need of a TE. He would be too much of a distraction.
