He may be the best fighter you haven't heard of, but don't worry you aren't alone. He is 135 lbs. and fights at bantamweight. There hasn't exactly been a lot of coverage in MMA for the lighter weights, but that is changing since the WEC, owned by Zuffa who also owns the UFC, has started promoting the bantam and featherweights.
So what should you know about Miguel Torres besides he's 32-1? He paid his way through college at Purdue University by fighting at a local bar in unsanctioned fights, and obviously honed his skills effectively in that arena.
He trains like a mad man. One of his training partners and UFC light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar said of his work ethic, "I watch him work out and go through his routine and I understand how much harder I could be working, even though I think I train pretty hard."
He's a man with principles. After turning pro he was offered a big sponsorship deal to wear a hat with the sponsor's logo. He turned it down without second thought and said, "I've never been a hat person and for me to do something I don't like to do just because someone is paying me money to do it goes against my principles. You have to stand for what you believe is right. I'm not going to go against what I believe in because someone wants to give me a couple of extra grand.
Apparently Torres also believes winning fights is the right thing to do. The Chicagoan likes to leave no doubt either. Because as of this day 3/26/2008 he's stopped 26 of his opponents.
Recently Yahoo Sports ranked Torres 10th in their pound for pound rankings. If the hatless, workout fiend who paid his way through college by fighting keeps his current pace he will surely climb even higher!
Thanks to Kevin Iole at Yahoo Sports for the article on Torres, it's a great read!
