Roger Clemens took the mound in front of a sold-out crowd on Monday and pitched the Yankees to a much-needed win in a tight division race. The Rocket looked to be in fine form as he tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out six.
Oh, did I mention his effort was for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and not the New York Yankees? That the opponent was Toledo of the International League and not Toronto of the American League? That the Triple-A Yankees were only a couple of games behind their division leaders, as opposed to the big brother Yankees, who need the Hubble telescope to see first place?
Minor details there. Sorry about that.
Ironically enough, on the mound for the real Yankees was a guy who should have been pitching to Mud Hens instead of Blue Jays: Matt DeSalvo. The rookie failed to get out of the fifth inning, giving up three runs in 4 2/3 innings before making way for The Mandatory Luis Vizcaino Appearance. The result was predictable from there: A 7-2 Blue Jays runaway.
The loss, coupled with the Red Sox's 5-3 win over Cleveland, means the Yankees have dropped four games in the standings in four days since taking two of three from Boston last week. The deficit stands at 13 1/2 games at the end of play on Memorial Day.
But don't let the small matter of the Yankees' season going down in flames get in the way of what has become Clemens' annual little exercise in vanity. Much like he did a year ago while tuning up for the Astros, Clemens is making his tour of small-town America with much fanfare. Hey, who needs spring training when you can barnstorm the minor leagues in style, riding the Madden Cruiser to Trenton and being the center of attention of the Greater Scranton Area? (Make sure to take the bus tour of The Office landmarks before you go.)
Who cares that the Astros missed the playoffs by a mere 1 1/2 games last season, a deficit that wouldn't have existed if Clemens had pitched a full season, or that the Yankees have been using the baseball equivalent of cannon fodder in his absence?
The headlines on Tuesday will say that Rocket is ready to rejoin the Yankees and help spark what would be a historic comeback to the top of the AL East standings, or perhaps the wild card. We're supposed to be impressed by his domination of a Mud Hens lineup highlighted by Timo Perez and Chris Shelton. (Cpl. Klinger batted cleanup.)
The truth is that the air has been let out of this balloon already thanks to the fade job being done by Derek Jeter's boys up in The Show. What we're left with in Rocket's comeback is a glorified reunion tour at best, a sideshow at worst.

sounds like comments from a typical Bosox fan. Have to love it. If Boston got Clemens, nobody would have anything negative to say about...the pro-Boston ESPN boys (Gammons and Ravitch), along with knucklehead John Kruk..great story they would say -Clemens going back to where it all started.
Clemens brings toughness to NY, something Boston has not had since '04..there are still 100+ games to go...hey can Boston say it went to the playoffs 12 straight years???

Let's not forget that starting pitchers only play 1 out of every 5 games. Even if Clemons won every single start, which would be next to impossible, You'd have 4 games between his starts for mediocrity on the mound. Andy's been ok, but the rest of the rotation needs get better. Cashman should be trying to wheel-and-deal for D-Train; or some other up-and-coming pitcher on a low budget franchise to help solidify the rotation. They should also start looking for Riveria's future replacement as the next big closer.

Gotta love sk49, spouting the cliches about the glories of the Yankee past (all those Division titles really make you guys happy, eh? The Yanks- still haven't won a World Series this century), as if that wins every argument, and acting as if the media hates the Yanks. Seriously, Luft ( and how can you say Luft is a Red Sox fan? Did you read his article right after the Sox won the World Series?) isn't bashing the Clemens deal. He's saying that Clemens can't save the Yanks this season, and that the media hype over his return is going to end up being a circus. That's a legit point. And if he'd gone to the Red Sox? He'd be going to a team that's 11 games ahead in their division... how WOULDN'T that be an interesting story?
As for the Yanks, it's no less legit to argue that the Yanks aren't going to pull out of their hole as it is for sk49 to spout that there are 100 games to go.

It wasn't a boston slanted article. He was stating the obvious. One, that clemens return is probably too late to resurect the yankees. Two, that clemens should be playing a full year.

j1b,
great...they were not 11 games in front when he signed...here is Bosox fan, always worried about what the Yanks are doing..instead of taking care of their own ship...cannot wait till it sinks again...crying over NY payroll...that excuse is over...$100 million for Dice K...less homegrown talent staring right now than NY

sk49, it was a good article. Shut up and think before you post mindless pro-Yankees crap. Not everyone who points out that the Yankees happen to now be 13 1/2 games out of 1st place (tied with that bastion of baseball tradition, Tampa Bay) is a Red Sox fan. And NOBODY said anything, in the article or the posts in response, about NY's payroll, except you.
These forums should have a mandatory minimum IQ to be able to post. Jeez.

It doesn't matter whether Clemens went to the Yankees or the Red Sox. He's still a mercenary **** who doesn't care about his team. And as another poster pointed out, even of he were to win every start, the Yanks most likely still wouldn't be within a whiff of first, with the way they're playing.
I wonder if the AAA Scranton Yankees had to add extra parking lot space so Clemens could park his ego.

wow how sad it is to see someone like sk49 wasting our planet's resources by being alive...In case you didn't notice Pedroia and Youk are home grown and Varitek might as well be since we've had him long before he became anything special. Our closer is home grown and Wakefield has been a Red Sox for almost all of my life. Not to mention Lester will be joining out rotation as a homegrown starter. So take your cliched Yankee fan excuses elsewhere

sk49 you're a typical whining Yankee y sycophant (being a Yankee fan you'll need to look that one up.) Orlando Cabrera of the Angels said it best this weekend when he opined about Yankee fans, "They don't appreciate good baseball," he said. "They just appreciate the Yankees beating up on everybody." "In Boston, they admire baseball," Cabrera said. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.--even the players think you su*k.

DBack - Way to go...The sad thing is, even a losing season won't teach the Yankee organization, or their fans, a much needed lesson.
Orlando Cabrera was dead on. Most Yankee fans aren't baseball fans. They're George Steinbrenner fans. They root for some old loon's wallet so they can walk around like bullies. New York misses the real Yankees that used to be, decades ago.
bravo
