The biggest football story concerning an American player has to be the season Michael Bradley is having in Holland. 4th highest goal scorer for Heeverveen (did I spell that right, H-Veen from now on. I'm one fo the many USA fans that's hoping Bradley develops to a premier midfielder. And when I say midfielder, I don't mean simply a defense midfielder or an attacking midfielder or a winger; I mean a complete midfielder. Bradley could easily surpass Claudio Reyna and Tab Ramos as the greatest AND complete midfielder. (Landon Donovan is more of an attacking midfielder) A player that can defend, hold, link passes, create plays, spark the offense (a la Beckenbauer and Fernando Redondo). I think Michael Bradley could be this player.
So now the question. Whenever an American starts playing well there's this assumption that England will be the next step. But why? I personally don't think England is an ideal place for a player to develop because of the pace and physicality. If anything, you just adapt to that style of play in particular rather than learning the whole aspects of the game. In my opinion, the best players develop by way of learning the game. Claudio Reyna was so great because of his football IQ. Fabregas is great because he has football soccer IQ for his age. Michael Bradley, along w/ Landon Donovan, are probably the only players w/ high football IQ (Maurice Edu is improving his IQ as well).
Finally here's my question: Should Michael Bradley leave H-Veen this summer or continue to develop in Holland? After the Felihaber fiasco, I believe Bradley should stay in H-Veen for one or two more seasons to develop his game. Remember, the central midfield position requires more knowledge of the game than any other position. As a Real Madrid fan, I wish Real Madrid would have loaned out Gago to Boca for one more season before coming to develop. He arrived too young. He's developing right now but he still makes a lot of mistakes. I do not want Michael Bradley to go to the EPL and have his career hurt. He deserves to be the best. And he can be the heart of the team for the next few years. I would love to see Bradley develop offensively (and what great place to develop offensively than in Holland) and form a solid center midfield partnership w/ Edu or Felihaber.
What do you guys think. What should be Bradley's next move? Stay in H-Veen? In Holland? Go to the bigger leagues, if so which one and which team?

Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, and Freddy Adu will end their soccer careers as 1, 2, and 3 on the US's alltime scoring list.

Report Offensive CommentI would love to see Bradley make a push for Serie A. The league is where midfielders either have nightmares or become superstars. Sure, it would be throwing Bradley into the fire right away, but think of it this way:
The EPL has become way too one-dimensional. While I think Bradley could succeed in the EPL given more seasoning, it won't be great for his US Nats career if he can't adapt to the varying styles of international play (whereas the EPL has one style, crammed down your throat every single time).
As for La Liga, unless your name is Madrid or Barca (it saddens me I can't include Sevilla), you're not going to see too much success. La Liga has become top heavy. Now that said, anything can happen in a single season and La Liga could even out, thus making this statement completely invalid.
Serie A offers an aggressive, speedy and defensive style that the other big two don't. Bradley won't put up the goals in Serie A, but he'll become a far greater well rounder player. Palermo might be a nice squad to fit in with.
Now, all of this said, I still think Bradley needs to spend one more year in Holland before he make the move.

Report Offensive Commentin my opinon he is the closes thing we have to a potential superstar, i like him better than altidore and adu.
I do believe he should stay in holland one more year, say move to a bigger club like ajax, psv, or feyenoord though to get more exposure and then amke a big money move. he still needs to develop

Report Offensive CommentHe will play for big name europe club in the future. I think he is perfect for Fullham, maybe that would make them 7 american on the team, + Brian McBride is retiring but more usa star are coming they should all go to fullham or other club i would love to see fulham about 50% of roster being American.

Report Offensive CommentBradley needs to stay in Holland and away from Fulham. I think the days of Fulhamerica is coming to an end, anyway.
As far as Bradley goes he should stay at H-veen for at least one more year then look to a league like Serie A. JHopper said it best, that Serie A won't turn him into a goal scorer but he will learn the game there.
Palermo isn't a bad choice either.

Report Offensive CommentI'm surprised by the responses so far. I thought some people would want him to leave to the EPL right away. The good thing is that we all seem to have patience for M.Bradley to develop, which is good. He has at least two World Cups to look forward too, and hopefully one day, a European Championship

Report Offensive CommentWhy rush it? He's just beginning to make a name for himself now. In a few years the big clubs will be at his door begging for him to come play for them. Personally as a Celtic fan I would love to see an American put on the Hoops (almost did with Brad Guzan in January but the deal fell thru) and Michael Bradley to Celtic would be an awesome move, I think. His style of play matches Gordon Strachan's coaching mentality and would compliment the offense perfectly.
But yes, stay in HEERENVEEN for another season or two until he fully matures. Really if you think about it most of the great players now stay at a smaller club for several years before they hit it huge at a giant club, just like former Heerenveen stars like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (now with Ajax) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid) did.
Im really looking forward to see how Bradley does, though. Gotta be patient.

Report Offensive CommentPlaying time, playing time, playing time. He won't get as much if he moves to a "bigger" club... stay at H-veen at *least* a year, develop further, and see what happens. Stauff's point is a good one...

Report Offensive CommentEither Bradley signs for a dutch club like PSV or Ajax or he joins a big german club (Hamburg, Stuttgart or Werder Bremen).
Herenven is a decent club, but it doesn't belong to european top 50, so he can score as many goals as he wants, but the real test will be joining a club that competes for a domestic title and one of the european cups.
We saw what happened with Beasley who deserves better than the Rangers. He left Eindhoven way too early.
The EPL is a great league as long as you play for one of the 8 elite teams, If you end up on another team who traditionally favours local players, a foreigner, no matter where he comes from, will always have a hard time adjusting to his new team and finding some playing time.
You don't go to England to get better, you're headed there when you have already reached a high level...

Report Offensive CommentStay in Holland a little longer and keep developing your game. Then make a move to a mid to upper level club in England, Spain or Italy. A move now would end up just like Feilhaber, no playing time. And no playing time would bring your game down, then when you finally did play you wouldn't look as good as you did when you came in the first place.

Report Offensive CommentBradly your ajoke I think your going back to the retirement league (M.L.S.) remember the bradly question is will he be going to a big club . The anwser is easy NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Just rumors. Who is going to want a player like him he's one dimensional. (American.. ) If he goes so called to Italy or France he will be playing on the bottoms teams. Well Alemania or Switzerland he can't make it out there either. So save the world from seeing you play and hack everyone you play against the trouble just come home to the states where every american plays like you, Fast straight forward and just plays kick ball... One name for that "M.L.S."
