April 28, 2007 was a woeful day for many Miami Dolphin fans all over the country.  That was the day of the 2007 NFL Draft.  It appeared that Miami would be able to snag Brady Quinn, the heir apparent (finally) to Dan Marino with the number nine overall selection in the draft.  If they passed up on Quinn, I believe the DolFans would want Amobi Okoye to provide youth and a heck of a lot of potential on the defensive line.  However, NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell told the world that Miami selected Ted Ginn, Jr./WR/The Ohio State University.  As a loyal Dolphin fan, I have felt the pain and agony of Miami's selection of Ginn, Jr.  At first, the pick didn't make any sense:  Sure, Miami needs wideout help, but the glaring QB need needed to be addressed.  Ginn's not even a number one wide reciever as most of his impact will come on special teams.  Ginn is going to be signing his first contract with a hurt ankle.  So, just why did the Miami Dolphins select Ginn?  I think I finally know why after a month of pondering this apparent bad pick and how it fits into first year head coach Cam Cameron's master plan for the Dolphins.

Through the rest of the Draft, the Dolphins did take a quarterback (John Beck, BYU) and improved one of the league's worst offensive lines with several selections on players in the trenches.  Miami also has a good runningback in Ronnie Brown and a another talented wide reciever in Chris Chambers.  Defensively, Miami still looks good returning Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas while adding Joey Porter.  These three, along with the much improved Channing Crowder, could make up the best line backing tandem in the league.  Its also looking inevitable that Miami will eventually acquire Trent Green from Kansas City.

Now, you throw in Ginn, Jr. with the rest of these players.  In the immediate future, you should be able to have a Devin Hester-like affect on the special teams and make the Dolphins very dangerous.  But this is really why the pick makes sense:  Miami lost their number two reciever and kick returner in Wes Welker, and Ginn should be a better kick returner this year and a better reciever with time.  So, the pick should help a little this year, but as I stated earlier, it really doesn't look bad at all three to four years from now.

Obviously, the Dolphins are rebuilding.  Trent Green should be a 'Fin for the next two to three years and can be a mentor to John Beck before he takes over.  Beck is reportedly looking good in Miami's mini camps and Cam Cameron has done a good job with quarterbacks in the past (i.e. Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Green).  Beck appears to be the QB Cameron wanted to begin with anyway.  So when you throw Beck, Brown, Chambers, Ginn, Taylor, Thomas, Crowder, and Porter all together, Miami's not tooking too bad come 2010.

You make some great points about their reasoning for making it. Which, I agree, is solid- no Welker / got Beck later. But all in all I believe it was a poor selection for no other reason than they could have traded the pick for more and still picked Ginn. If they could've done that (even if Ginn eclipses Rice and plays even longer) it was a bad pick. However, their front office does know more about the draft rankings than I do...

The Dolphins could regret taking Ginn over the other receivers who were available...but, I don't believe Brady Quinn will be anything for Cam Cameron and the rest of the organization to lose sleep over.

The thing that intrigues me about Ginn is that he can change a game in an instant and I bet he sets up a least a couple of wins for the fins next year.
