3 Number of letters (3) in the word wow! This word was uttered by me and probably approximately 402,000 others when in the first fight of the night Anthony Johnson devastated Tommy Speer. During the build up I wondered how this one would end since both men were coming off submission losses. Johnson answered emphatically at the 0:51 mark of round one when he violently TKO'd Speer against the fence.
2 As in (2's) were wild thanks mainly to Nate Diaz and Steve Mazzagatti. And it was fitting considering the card was on April (2)nd.
2 Number (2) of controversial fight stoppages. First the TKO of Houston Alexander and second the dropping of Karo Parisyan. Mazzagatti was the referee of both and caught hell from the fans because of the stoppages. The first prompted a chorus of boos and Irvin to state, "You wanna do it in the parking lot?" Obviously he doesn't mind a re-match and Alexander had a few thoughts regarding the end of the quick fight, "I've got hit harder by my kids than that." And, "That's crap!" In all fairness Mazzagatti's job is to protect the fighters and he did that in both instances.
22 Age (22) of Nate Diaz, he is young and slick on the ground.
2 Difference in years (2) between Diaz's age and Kurt Pellegrino's wrestling experience. Kurt's been grappling for 20 years. It seemed to be to his advantage early but...
2 Number of fingers (2) Nate Diaz offered while on his back with Pellegrino locked into a nasty tight triangle choke, and (2) number of biceps Diaz showed the world after he offered the middle fingers.
2 The round (2) when many of these (2's) happened as it was at 3:06 of round (2) when Pellegrino tapped.
2 The number of DEA agents (2) flanking Joe Rogan. He was interviewing them about the new show that takes us inside the DEA. Hmm, Rogan with (2) DEA agents seems a little ironic and get this, the interview came right after the (2) Diaz brothers, Nick and Nate stepped out of the Octagon after Nate's great submission victory. We all know the Diaz's take on something the DEA probably frowns upon...and to complete the oddly ironic story, the executive producer of DEA is Al Roker! That's right, the weather man who dropped a ton of weight and once stated he wants to be under (2)00 pounds. Weatherman, ha, now we know he's gotta be working undercover.
2 The number of fights (2) to go the distance. The 12 fight card saw seven TKO's, three submissions, and only two decisions.
Time for a new number!
8 Number of seconds (8) it took the televised night to start off with a bang. We all know what took place when Irvin TKO'd Alexander with the superman punch and if you missed it because you weren't settled in let me just say, "I told you so!" During the build up on my Sports by the Numbers MMA blog I stated, "Both of these strikers are going to come out swinging so take your restroom break and get your coke, beer, popcorn, chicken wings, or whatever else well before this one starts. Most likely it's going to be fast and spectacular!" Not often I'm this right so (1) the number of times I will point it out, now moving on.
8 More on the number (8), it was way back at UFC (8) over 12 years ago when Don Frye needed only (0:08) in his MMA debut to KO Thomas Ramirez. Of course Frye fought and won two more times on the night, his second fight lasted only 0:48. James Irvin didn't have to fight again last night, but like I mentioned earlier he was ready, even if it was in the parking lot.
