In response to:
Pedro Martinez on DL, out 4-6 weeks
Three hours after Pedro Martinez landed at JFK Airport, he landed on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring that is expected to keep him from pitching for at least four to six weeks. The Mets activated Brooklyn-born Nelson Figueroa and temporarily assigned him to the bullpen, although Willie Randolph indicated it's likely that Figueroa, a Lincoln High School graduate, will get a start against the Brewers in Flushing next weekend.
It is well known to us Boston fans that Pedro is among the best pitchers in the league. Any team that has him and uses him to their advantage has exactly that. An advantage. With him now on the DL, it is likely that the Mets will have a bit of trouble getting through the month or two that he's going to spend on the DL. Yes, they do have other good pitchers, but trying to go that long without Pedro is definitely going to be a challenge for the bullpen. As for who's going to be back in the bullpen? Figueroa seems to be a likely pick.
