Yes, I know it's only one game, and just the first one at that. However, the 'Caps scoring ten runs in the first inning of the 2008 season and cruising to a 15-2 win in South Bend has got me excited. Also, with the Tigers 0-3, the 'high powered' offenese scoring one run in the last two games, and Miggy and Sheff 'injured', I NEED something to be happy about.
Ramon Garcia picked up the win for West Michigan, going six innings, striking out five, and giving up only four hits without surrendering a run. Grand Rapids native Casper Wells hit the first homer of 2008 in the first inning, and went 2-6 with two RBI's. Also helping the 'Caps offense was Justin Henry. He went 2-4 with two doubles and three RBI's. Carlson and Ciriaco also had two RBI's each going 1-6 and 1-4 respectively.
Anyway, it's a good indication that the Whitecaps will hopefully be competitive again this season an give the kids and I some good memories of watching some good baseball. The fun part is seeing these guys at this level, and then watching them on TV in a Tiger uniform like Inge, Zumya, and Thomas.
Here's the official link for the Midwest League site with someone who writes a lot better than I do gives a really good re-cap of the game:
