O.K., most of us are familiar with the story of Judas Iscariot, the man that betrayed Jesus Christ in the final days of his life. From this day on, betrayors are commonly called Judases (or Benedict Arnold's after the American General who switched for monetary reasons to the British during the Revolutionary War). Recently, Democrat talking head James Carville called New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson a Judas for betraying Hillary Clinton and siding with Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential Race. Well, today I am going to be calling a sports figure a Judas.

Whom you might ask? Well, the Judas in question is coach Mike Montgomery. ESPN is reporting that coach Montgomery has agreed in principle to replace recently fired coach Ben Braun at the University of California. The reason this qualifies Montgomery for Judas status is that Montgomery spent 18 years at Stanford where he compiled a 363-167 record. The man lead the Cardinal to 12 NCAA apparences in those 18 years, and when he left the Cardinal for the Golden State Warriors he called for the naming of former assistant and University of Nevada coach at the time, Trent Johnson, for the position. Montgomery is reportedly still very close to Johnson, the President of Stanford, and the program in general. So, why would he walk away from his "family" at Stanford to take a position at his schools' most hated rival?

Well, besides the fact that he just wants to coach again, I am sure that money is the motive. Someone is going to read this and call me naive, but it just bothers me that there is no loyalty in "amateur" sports. It's one thing for a coach to leave his program, to go back to his alma mater, or to go to a more prominent program, but when you spend almost two decades building a team, only to turn around and coach your hated rival it sticks in my craw. That's just not right.

I hope that the Stanford faithful boo Montgomery when he returns to campus with the Golden Bears. I hope they give him the treatment, the same treatment that fans do at Duke games. Get all in him, let him feel the betrayal. Let it sting, and let it sting good. We all know that the crime of betrayal, leads to hanging and may Montgomery hang his head in shame for this decision.

As always thanks for reading.

I'm probably going to get killed for this one. I am sure some hater is going to come by and call me naive.

I probably am but this is ridiculous.

You are naive.

Judas - Nick Saban.

OK, I had to say that. But seriously, I see where you are coming from, but on the other hand doesn't a person have a right to change jobs if they want?
Can't you leave Apple and go work for IBM? Or Wendy's to Burger King? Or whatever.

Godd blog, never heard the story before

That's not naive. You obvioulsy believe in integrity. On the other hand, we will probably never know the true reason for his leaving. I can't help but think about the kids he recruited. If they want to leave too, they have to sit for a year.

Thanks Hllywd and RUGator. I have been disappointed by human nature, and the lack of integrity for years now. Maybe because I have an ideal sense of the world, and am failed on a constant basis.

1Hawkeye1 proposes the one thing I was thinking about. Yes, you can change jobs but I just wonder where is the loyalty? Does it end due to monetary reasons? I have no problem with Montgomery coaching again, but I just wonder why did it have to be Cal?

Thanks Thugmeister. Maybe I needed the input of someone who actually lives in the area. I guess I see Cal-Stanford from the perspective of a large rivalry. Maybe, I am wrong.

Nah it's not. For example if Lloyd Carr was to find his way behind the Ohio State sideline, I would have a coronary.
