We saw a classic pitchers duel last night. Aaron Cook and Tom Glavine kept both teams off balance in the fastest 9 inning game in Coors Field history at 2 hours and 5 minutes.
The Braves could only muster 1 run on 3 hits, 2 of which were in the 1st inning when Yunel Escobar singled and Chipper doubled him home. As painful as that sounds, we were in for a great baseball game regardless. Tom Glavine had everything working, and he was around the plate the entire game. Aaron Cook, same thing, only he had a great sinker that the Braves drove into the ground all night.
Peter Moylan and Blaine Boyer were the only two bullpen guys used, which is good news because Bobby had been so pitcher happy lately. Glavine was able to pitch into the 7th to help give them a rest. This is exactly what we need from the entire starting rotation. A healthy stream of 6-7 inning starts. It took Moylan a batter or two to realize you have to keep the ball DOWN. Blaine Boyer however....doesn't understand this concept. His fastball was flirting at the fat of the plate and Holliday made him....made US....PAY for it. A two run home run in the 8th inning sealed the deal for both teams, who were having a hard time hitting in the cold weather.
Kelly Johnson singled in the 9th, but Escobar hit into a double play and Chipper grounded to second to officially end it. A heartbreaking loss, the 4th loss of the season...all by one run. I like that were keeping ourselves IN these games, but a playoff team will need to find ways to be on top of these 1 run differences.
A positive note to end it.....Mike Gonzalez should begin throwing in a week and is on schedule to join the Braves the first week of June.
