How do you define greatness?
I look at how you changed the game, no Mikan does not have the eye-popping stats
But look at the rules that the NBA had to put in place to STOP him from donimanting the game
1. The Lane- forcing centers to not campout under the basket and actually MOVE around- imagine Mutumbo or ZO if they never had to leave the paint- Shaq might have brought a lawn chair to games
2. Goal tending- you have to stop the ball on the way up- not on the way down- before Mikan you could scrape a ball off the cylinder and it was legal- imagine the Blocks/Rebounds Yao would have if that was still in place
3. THE SHOT CLOCK- Imagine a NBA game ending 15-12 - it has happened! and as COMMON to see scored like a womens NIT game back in Mikans Day- they put in the shot clock to FORCE the lakers to give the ball up- No shot clock and DENVER might go undefeated with Melo and AI running around
Mikan was declared the BEST player in the first half century.
Mikan PLayed 7 years his final year was an aborted comeback 2 years after retirement
His first 6 years
made FIRST team ALL NBA
and you want scoring?
3 TIMES scoring leader, 2x came in Second- and came in 4th his final year before retirement
You like Rebounding?
EVERY YEAR he was in the NBA he was either ONE or TWO in rebounding (again excepting the final year)
He was also the Driving force behind the ABA- and pushed to bring in 2 things- the red-white and blue ball and
the Three Point line- two things that definded the ABA and increased scoring.
also won 5 titles in his first 6 years- with an EXPANSION TEAM
To sum up
Take out his comeback
5 for 6 titles
6 for 6 FIRST team NBA
4 for 4 1 or 2 in Rebounding
6 for 6 top 4 in scoring - lead 3 times
Hows that for GREATNESS
Ladies and Gentlemen- George Mikan
