The last day and a half has been a little hectic for me, and I'm not talking about Hillary and Obama.
No, it's because I've been busy sorting out my new computer.
For years I've had a Compaq Presario w/ Windows ME...and 64 MB of RAM. (Which obviously don't work well in this day and age.) I resolved that someday I was going to move on up to a better computer.
Which I did...after learning a valuable, if not expensive, lesson.
It all started last month when I get something in the mail from one of those sweepstakes people (no, NOT Publishers Clearing House...though I did get something from them). It told of getting a (rebuilt) desktop or laptop computer, or a stereo system, or any of countless other things. Thing was, they sent along $400 vouchers which you could use towards buying one of these deals.
"OK", I thought, "this smells like an elaborate scam." And I sure as hell was NOT about to send a check to these bozos. So, what did I do?? Just go down to the grocery store, make out a money order for the balance on the desktop (and luggage), and send off for these suckers.
Oh, and keep every receipt for this...in case I need to sic a lawyer on these (potential) flim-flam artists. I may look dumb, but I ain't stupid...
Well, the luggage came first--but not before I had to pay C.O.D. on it, to the tune of 36 bucks and change. It looks good, and I really did need it. Now, to wait...and wait...and wait...on the computer to come.
The monitor came Saturday afternoon; no C.O.D. for that. The computer itself?? It showed up yesterday afternoon, along with a C.O.D. for almost $105. It's rebuilt, as I said earlier...but it runs. And, it's Windows XP--which means this Fannation page looks a damned sight better than it did before.
Let's see, sending a money order for $379.90 (plus the vouchers @ $800, which doesn't count), paying over $140 in C.O.D. charges...that's close to $520 I spent to get this stuff. Otherwise, we'd be talking BIG money here.
Anyway, this wasn't about money; this was about upgrading my computer to 4 times the amount of RAM that I had before. (Not to mention 30 GB of space.) The upshot of all this, is that if what I think happens next month happens...and I'm sorry, but I CAN'T say anything about it right now; I don't want to jinx this...I might be able to upgrade a lot more in my life.
I can say, it has to do with (perhaps) my happy shiny face on live TV...
