He's a Nutt

Now that Ole Miss has a coach to match its talent, the Rebels could be a dark horse team next year and into the not too distant future.

For those who don't know (or forgot), former Arkansas head coach, Houston Nutt, is the new sheriff in Oxford. He's got a solid reputation of not only being a builder of teams, but his no-nonsense appraoch will be a welcome change for the Ole Miss faithful.

I had the chance to spend some time in Oxford, Mississippi many years ago. To me, it's the idyllic old south college. I loved the campus and "feel" of the school. Great old red-brick buildings, beautiful coeds, and a gorgeous green called "The Grove." With the underrated history of Ole Miss football and the addition of a top-notch coach and leader, I'm looking forward to watching my "adopted" favorite team in the coming years.

Sounds like a great place to visit, RUGator... and I look forward to seeing what Nutt can do with the Rebels in the coming years...

Big, thanks. It is. It's also the home of William Faulkner, the writer whose work transformed my life. A highly recommended trip (especially in the summer when it's hot and less populated. Has the feel of going back in time). You just fly into Memphis and it's like an hour drive south from there. Thanks again for reading and commenting.

I'll be keeping an eye out for Ole Miss to do well! Houston Nutt has been one of those coaches that, in my opinion, hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves. Great blog!

Ole Miss Law School writes me on occasion. Little do they know, I didn't sign up for the June LSAT's. I just wanted the catalogue. I'm planning to take the October exam and see how I do. I am testing in the 150's, but I am psyching myself up to score in the 160's.

I really don't think that Houston Nutt will make that much of a difference. He was respectable at Arkansas, but didn't do anything extraordinary. He is a solid coach, but the SEC is stacked with top level coaches, and Nutt doesn't have the ability to consistently beat them. Even the bottom teams of the SEC have coaches that are at or above the level of Houston Nutt. 5 coaches with a National Championship in this conference, and Tuberville should be number 6. It will be a while before Nutt turns the tide in recruiting even in his home state, as Sylvester Croom is turning the corner at Mississippi State.

I don't see much from the Rebels this season.

I always find it interesting to see how coaches who change schools within the SEC will do and how they will be received. Espcially in comparison to their old teams.

Nutt's a great old school coach. Pretty underrated. Ya dont hear much about Ole Miss, other than the fact that Eli Manning went there. Good school and good luck to em

Lol; I completely missed that he'd gone to Ole Miss. When did it happen? This is that first I've heard of it....

Anyway, I wonder how he'll do at Ole Miss. Good blog, by the way.

Part of the point of this blog is that he's going to a team with way more talent than anything he had at Arkansas. You can yell and scream about McFadden, but in terms of overall talent, Ole Miss has a lot of talent almost every year.

As a Gator fan, I will NEVER forgive Spurrier for bolting Florida for the NFL AFTER he said, after winning the championship in 96 that he was nothing more than an "ole ball coach." He could have been a legend. Anyway, while I'm usually very leery of coaches who change schools (especially within conference, i.e., Spurrier and Tuberville- another opportunist from the Phil Fulmer/Spurrier school of coaching integrity), Nutt got screwed by Arkansas. They had a back room deal cut with Petrino and essentially got Nutt out after he had a good run. In fact, you could argue that he was the best coach Ark has had since the Broyles era.

Nutt did bring Arkansas into the college football fan's conscience..maybe he can do the same at Ole Miss. Good blog.
