Hello, friends and foes alike, and welcome to my mock draft. I will try to make this as perfect as possible, and appealing to all fans of all teams. It is a 1-round mock with no trades, and is based both on who I think the team will take and what I think is there best choice. With no further ado, here we go:
#1 - DOLPHINS
Games are won in the trenches, and lucky for the Dolphins, perhaps the two best prospects are on the line(s). They will opt for offense, however, and take OT Jake Long with the first overall pick. A great left tackle opens up all sorts of things on offense.
#2 - RAMS
The Rams are happy enough to take DE Chris Long, and hope that he takes after the old man. Long edges out Glenn Dorsey here, in my opinion.
#3 - FALCONS
Matt Ryan is oh-so-appealing here, isn't he? Still, if the Falcons say they're not gonna draft him, we have to go on their word for now. The Falcons shore up their DL and take DT GLENN DORSEY, despite injury concerns.
#4 - RAIDERS
Al Davis is far too crazy for anyone to really know who he's gonna pick, but I'm going to guess either McFadden, who is perhaps the best overall athlete in the draft, or DE/LB Vernon Gholston, who is also a physical monster and can play more than one position.
#5 - CHIEFS
There are a lot of ways the Chiefs could go here. For now, I'll have them opting for DT Sedrick Ellis, who might actually be a better value pick than Dorsey. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if they go for Matt Ryan or even an OT.
#6 - JETS
Need I waste words here? The Jets won't pull any punches and take RB Darren McFadden within a minute of being on the clock.
#7 - PATRIOTS
Another case of there being a lot of ways the Pats could go. Their first reasonable choice was probably Gholston, but I don't think he would've dropped this far anyways. They might also go with a lineman like Quentin Groves or Derrick Harvey, or even a linebacker like Rivers, but I see them taking the path of CB Leodis McKelvin, to fill the void Asante Samuel created when he went to Philly.
#8 - RAVENS
The Baltimore Brass pull a quick one and take QB Matt Ryan in what many may consider a steal, despite the Falcons being the only team that has QB woes (well, so does KC, but I hear they're still high on Brodie Croyle).
#9 - BENGALS
Cincy knows they need to go defense here, and they also need the most help on the line and among LBs. With no real top-10 value left for the DL, they opt for LB Keith Rivers to fix their depleted linebacker corps.
#10 - SAINTS
The problem here is, there is no true value left here at positions the Saints need help at. They have to make a value reach here, though a need is a need. They go with CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, hoping he channels his cousin Antonio.
#11 - BILLS
There are oh-so many ways the Bills could go here, and as a Bills fan, they are all oh-so enticing. Malcolm Kelly has fallen off their radar now, but I still see them going wide receiver. Therefore, they take WR Devin Thomas, while all the analysts call it a reach. It's a need pick, dammit!
#12 - BRONCOS
How could they resist OT Ryan Clady? Too bad that Matt Lepsis retired.
#13 - PANTHERS
If the Panthers don't take an offensive lineman here, I'll eat my socks. It's either Chris Williams or OG/OT Branden Albert, I'll go with the latter though.
#14 - BEARS
Everyone is convinced that they will go with OT Jeff Otah, and who am I to say they won't?
#15 - LIONS
I could see them going with a linebacker, an area where the Lions are most certainly weak, but they could potentially also go for RB, where they are perhaps weaker. Thus, they take RB Rashard Mendenhall, considered the 2nd best back in the draft.
#16 - CARDINALS
I could have seen them going with Mendenhall, but now that he's off the board I don't see Jonathan Stewart as being the best choice here. It's going to be, in my opinion, a cornerback, and in my opinion CB Aquib Talib just barely edges out Mike Jenkins.
#17 - VIKINGS
Oh, they are almost certainly going to go with a defensive end here. There are still two very good ones left on the board, and I see them opting for DE Derrick Harvey, who almost certainly fills up a big need on D for them and gives them one of the best lines in the league.
#18 - TEXANS
I think they may go for cornerback, or running back, or even O-line...but in the end, they opt for OT Chris Williams, who fills a pretty darn big need at LT for these guys. That position is very suspect, and as has been said before, a Left Tackle changes the face of an offense.
#19 - EAGLES
Unfortunately for Philly, all good offensive linemen are already off the board. They therefore look at wide receivers, and take WR Malcolm Kelly, who dropped after a pretty poor Pro Day workout. Still, his season performance speaks for itself.
#20 - BUCCANEERS
They seem to be on a destination for a receiver, and I see them taking WR DeSean Jackson, a playmaker who can turn an average play into a great one. He will also more than likely open up their return game.
#21 - REDSKINS
I certainly see them trying to fix their defensive line here. They go with DE Phillip Merling, although the size of Calais Campbell may be too alluring to ignore.
#22 - COWBOYS (from CLE)
Dallas has two first rounders, so they have a lot of room to work with here. I personally see them taking CB Mike Jenkins, although don't be surprised if they go for a running back to help take pressure off of Marion Barber, a job the now-gone Julius Jones held.
#23 - STEELERS
Jeff Otah would have been an ideal pick here, but now that he is off the board, they elect for OT Gosder Cherilus. Alan Faneca's prescense is no longer on that line, and a playmaker is needed for sure.
#24 - TITANS
I don't think there is any doubt here that the Titans will try to arm Vince Young with as many weapons as possible, namely at WR. Not only is WR Limas Sweed the best available receiver here, he is also a former teammate of Young.
#25 - SEAHAWKS
I could possibly see the Seahawks taking a DT here, but I think that their biggest need is at runningback. Sean Alexander is a shadow of his old self, Julius Jones is not good enough to start and Maurice Morris is nothing more than a capable backup. RB Jonathan Stewart gets his due here, although Felix Jones remains a vague option.
#26 - JAGUARS
I don't see there being a question of Jacksonville taking a defensive end here. There is still good value here, and I see physical specimen DE Calais Campbell being taken here, although there are more options.
#27 - CHARGERS
Hmm...call me crazy, but I see them taking former free-faller S Kenny Phillips. Their defensive backfield needs some work, especially since Drayton Florence left, although I think Cromartie is too good for the Chargers to go CB in the first round.
#28 - COWBOYS
They already filled their problem at CB when they took Jenkins, so now I think they will turn their head to RB. Felix Jones certainly fills the void left by Jones, and although Dallas could opt to go for WR, I don't see anyone worth taking here.
#29 - 49ERS (from IND)
In my opinion, this is a bit of a reach, but the Niners will probably not be fooled into thinking Isaac Bruce is the savior at WR and take WR James Hardy with this pick. He is a great physical specimen, though he does carry some off-field issues.
#30 - PACKERS
The consensus choice for them appears to be a cornerback. Most good ones are off the board, so I see them taking CB Antoine Cason, or perhaps Brandon Flowers.
#31 - PATRIOTS
Forfeit.
#31 - GIANTS
I could perhaps see them taking a linebacker like Dan Connor or Jerod Mayo here, but I think they will instead focus on cornerback and, with CB Brandon Flowers being the best option still on the board, take him.
I hope you enjoyed this, please feel free to give me some feedback!
