Bonds answer to Tigers' woes?
The blogosphere is loaded with commentary about what Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski ought to do, and one prevailing suggestion is hiring Barry Bonds - the talk escalated when designated hitter Gary Sheffield missed time with a torn tendon in his left ring finger. Sheffield is playing again, but he's hitting .167 (4-for-24) with no extra-base hits and one RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Dombrowski was asked about the possibility of signing Bonds, and he quickly blew it off by saying, "Our everyday lineup is set. It's not even a situation with us."
Barry Bonds has what the tiger's need. A big bat that can still deliver the long ball, thus providing much needed RBI's. Also, Barry will be a drawing card that will put fannies in seats throughout the season in Detroit as well as on the road. The main problem is the immaturity of Gary Sheffield. He hates Bonds for a variety of reasons including Barry stealing Gary's personal "Chef". Jim Leyland on the other hand, is like Barry's surrogate father.
I have watched Barry closely, since he arrived here in San Francisco many seasons ago. To me, he is the best hitter I have ever seen. He may be in his 40's now, but is still a major force against opposing pitchers.
I say to Detroit & its Tiger fans,it's a no-brainer. Barry will help put the Tigers in the playoffs. If Sheffield doesn't like Jim Leylands actions, adios' trouble-maker. Any player who puts down Joe Torre is a jerk.
Cliff Bond
