I really thought one more year was in him...
You've all heard by now, Steve McNair announced his retirement this afternoon after 13 years in the NFL. With him, goes the last link to the Houston Oilers (what the Titans were known as before moving to Nashville). But that's not why I write this. No, I have a more underlying reason.
Anyone in FanNation who wants to question Steve McNair's heart or his character, deals with me. All you have to do is go back to the 2002 season, to see why I say this. The man had bruised ribs, among other ailments that would've left a lesser man in traction. Plus, the Titans started out that year 0-5 (loss #5 came at the hands of the Redskins, BTW...at home!!!). Not exactly what I'd call a good start to the season.
But Steve McNair went out there, brusied ribs and all. All he did, was lead the Titans to the AFC championship game. Sure, they lost to the Raiders, but it sure as hell WASN'T for lack of trying. Every week during the regular season, the question would be "WILL McNair take to the field???". Not "CAN he take the field??", but "WILL he???".
He proved 'em wrong, every week. Steve McNair answered the bell, and then some.
So no one has to tell me about his heart, or his character. I'll leave it to others to define his career.
Yet, today I feel a twinge of sadness. Sadness, because I really felt he could've gone one more year...and then leave the scene. Now, we'll never know.
This afternoon, Steve McNair answered one final bell. He knew when to walk away.
Now, the ultimate question awaits: between Brett Favre, Warren Sapp and Steve McNair...who gets left out of the Hall of Fame come January of 2013 (when they become eligible)?? We KNOW Favre gets in 1st ballot...so it's Sapp or McNair who has to wait. Which one??
You know, as much as Anthony E. likes to say I could be a fricking sportswriter (see his interview of me)...this is one time I'm glad I'm not a HOF voter.
