The writing was on the wall. 19 year veteran Frank Thomas was cut today by the Toronto Blue Jays. He had recently been pulled from the starting lineup after a very slow start. Jays manager J. P. Riccardi said the move was "by mutual consent. He doesn't want to be here if he's not going to play much, and we do want him to be happy. He handled if with class, and I appreciate that." Thomas, a known slow starter, was hitting .167 with 3 home runs and 11 RBI this season. He was offered "a lesser role of 2 or 3 starts a week" but the 39-year old Thomas declined. Thomas, a member of the 500 home run club and future hall of famer, is not retired, and will look for another job this season.
