  • Braves SWEEP Dodgers
  • Teixeira heating up
  • Chipper quad still sore
  • Jurrjens K's Andruw 3 times
  • Soriano eyes return

The Braves looked solid this weekend vs the Dodgers.  Kelly Johnson had a couple of nice hits, Jeff Francouer and Gregor Blanco also looked very good.  Frenchy hit a nice double in the 8th after Teixeira's two run HR.  The Braves really kept it going.  Blanco went 5 for 9 on the series getting to start all three games.  Matt Diaz came in to replace him in the 7th yesterday and promptly struck out twice.  Matty needs to figure out what is wrong...and fast or Blanco will start platooning with him. Jurrjens also was very effective, striking out a career high, 8 batters, including Andruw 3 times.  The Braves end up sweeping the series, beating LA 6-1, 4-1 and 6-1.

Mark Teixeria is finally heating up...hitting a clutch 2 run opposite field knock on Saturday to put the Braves head for good, helping them win 4-1.....and his 2 run Hr yesterday...going 6 for 12 in the series.  He has his batting average up to .250, from .203 coming in.

Chipper sore quad is still hurting.  He pulled it in Colorado and says it hurt more on Sunday than it has since that first day.  He should play today, but I for one think he should sit out this entire series with Washington and just rest it.  He needs to play in the upcoming METS series (especially since its at Shea).

Andruw Jones hit his first HR of the year, and in a Dodger uni...of Chuck James (seems fitting)...Chucky actually pitched very well...held the Dodgers in check.  Andruw faces Jurrjens for the first time yesterday and struck out 3 times.  He pitched him very nicely and exactly to his weaknesses which are DOWN and AWAY.  He did a couple of times tease Andruw with some fastballs over the plate, which he took mostly.....then got him with those lazy down and away pitches that we KNOW he'll swing at.

Raffy Soriano played catch this weekend.  Coach Cox says he should be able to throw off the mound this weekend and may come off the DL on Thursday.

I should also mention the bullpen was stellar.  Blaine Boyer, Will Ohman, Manny Acosta, and Jeff Bennett were great...(Bennett did start on Friday).

So next up...Washington.

GO BRAVES!!!

I was at Saturday's game......it was GREAT! :-)

I agree about Chipper; we need him healthy for their trip to Shea. Tex looks more comfortable at the plate now; he did say in a recent interview that it takes him a while to 'heat up' at the start of the regular season.

I had to applaud Andruw the first time he came to the plate, just seemed right. And then he hits a home run, had to applaud that too since we didn't see that a lot from him last year. LOL

I wouldn't brag too much about a .500 club beating the 2nd worst team in the NL. We'll see how they do against the Mets, Cubs, D'backs.

April 21, 2008  01:45 PM ET

This is a Braves blog. There is no "bragging" going on. Just game by game commentary. If you continue reading this board, you'll see my blogs even after a series vs NY, Chicago and Arizona.

FYI...we already played the Mets and swept them, albiet it was a 2 game series.

April 21, 2008  01:58 PM ET

I don't mind the bragging, its good for the soul, but I was more disappointed in my Dodgers playing so badly. I'll look forward to reading more of your blogs. Your next series is against the one team that's worst than the Dodgers. Good luck.

Sweeping the Dodgers is about as impressive for an MLB these days as sweeping the Las Vegas 51s: not impressive, but hey fool good and congrats.

April 21, 2008  02:30 PM ET

A comment from Cassidy that makes any sense is about as impressive as...well there is no such thing as a comment from Cassidy making sense....so nevermind.

April 22, 2008  08:08 AM ET

I don't care WHO they sweep; the point is that they won those games and are now on a five game winning streak. As for those victories not being 'impressive', that is just a matter of opinion and really sounds like sour grapes from a disgruntled Dodgers fan. GO BRAVES! :-)

Hey ATLfan15...do you have season tickets? I wish I lived in ATL....in SF season tickets are like $1500. They should give away, not the foam, but the heavy duty tomahawks out to fans at the game, the ones that are $12 at the gift shop....and organize a wave of choppers again.

April 23, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Oasis, I don't have season tix.....they are VERY expensive here as well. I purchase a coupon package every year that has 'buy one get one free' and 'one free ticket' coupons; helps to reduce the cost just a bit. Of course, they make that money back in parking fees. LOL
I just love Turner Field because there are no bad seats in the entire place; you get a very good view of the action pretty much anywhere you sit.

April 23, 2008  09:13 AM ET

ATLfan15, when I was there I saw season ticket plans in the bleachers for $289 or somewhere around there. That seems very cheap to me, as in SF, bleacher season tix are over $1k.

April 23, 2008  09:32 AM ET

I believe the season tix you are referring to are up in the 400 level (highest in the stadium). The price IS reasonable.....if you want to be obligated to attend every game. I try to go to at least 10 games a year, but those are spaced out over the entire regular season.
As for the prices in SF, how else are they going to cover Zito's salary? LOL :-)

April 23, 2008  04:43 PM ET

I think it was to cover Barry Bonds salary all those years. I know the economics are different in SF compared to Atlanta.

Good for Jurrjens. This kid is awesome.

that's right.... my boy is heating up!!! Hopefully this is only the beginning for Teixeira and he ends the season as one of the top hitters in the game! Go Tex!
