Since we couldn't convince the GMs of all 29 teams with first-round draft picks to carve out some time for us today, we opted for the next best thing.
Newspaper beat writers.
For the next five hours, SI.com will conduct a mock draft with the people whose job it is to follow the NFL team in their city 365 days a year. The picks will be published here, every 10 minutes or so, until the first round is complete. The goal is to have the most informed mock draft this side of Don Banks. At worst, we know we'll get one pick right (thank you, Mr. Parcells).
And we're off...

It's kinda boring to take an offensive lineman No. 1, but I know there isn't a Peyton Manning in this draft. Hopefully, Parcells knows what he's doing.

Report Offensive CommentWe are ok at DT, we need an end to rush the passer. Give us Chris Long!!

Report Offensive CommentGreat pick. Miami will never have a pro bowl qb without a strong o line.

Report Offensive CommentLike the Dolphin writer had a choice...
"No, I don't care that we've already signed Jake Long! I want to sign Vernon Gholston!"
Right...

Report Offensive CommentIt is all about risk and reward. Take Dorsey even with all the questions, he could be an impact player of the defense.
c note | 04/24/08, 12:11 PM
Report Offensive CommentI agree RamFan, though Dorsey is higher on most boards, I think the rams need to secure an edge presence to compliment Carriker

Report Offensive CommentThe one thing that really surprised me was the money dished out to Jake Long. He's never played a down in the NFL yet he's getting paid 58m/5 years & 30mil guaranteed. How do you know for sure he won't be the next Robert Gallery? And if he is, that's going to set Miami back even longer...an unproven rookie should not be making the most money at his position in the NFL.

Goodell: Welcome Back Peters! | 04/24/08, 12:15 PM
Report Offensive CommentJho, I do see your point, but the fact is he is the number one pick overall. What are you really supposed to do? I'm sure Parcells could have weedled the money down a bit, but by how much? Not enough to make a huge impact, I'm sure.

Report Offensive CommentChris Long is one of the "safest" picks at the top of the draft. Great character and you know he's going to give you great effort on every play.
jho | 04/24/08, 12:18 PM
Report Offensive CommentVery interesting considering they took Adam Carricker last year in the 1st. How or when in STL gonna adress the o-line issue???
Goodell: Welcome Back Peters! | 04/24/08, 12:18 PM
Report Offensive CommentChris Long is a safe pick for St. Louis. That's good, because the last thing St. Louis needs is a bust worth at least 10 million in guaranteed.
[tcat75] Rangers Contending? | 04/24/08, 12:18 PM
Report Offensive CommentI hope you give the Panthers an offensive tackle. With Jake Delhomme coming back and Matt Moore as a back-up (which will only do good if he can play as well as he did to end last season), then we will be set at QB and at RB we have DeAngelo Williams. Other than OT, the only first round pick we could use is at WR were Steve Smith needs help.

Report Offensive Commenttcat: I was just kind of implying that something has to be done with the payscale for those drafted at the top of Round 1 in the NFL. Pretty soon you're going to have rookies making twice as much money as Tom Brady. What do you say about that?
jho | 04/24/08, 12:19 PM
Report Offensive CommentAnd with the third pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select Marcus Vick from VaTech.
