So, the NFL draft is coming at us pretty quickly. Which brings new found excitement to every single NFL fan. Including myself. It's always interesting watching bits and pieces of the draft, because I could never watch the draft from beginning to end. Anyway I'm interested in what some teams are going to do.
I love the number one overall pick, Jake Long. This is an extremely safe pick and is high reward and low risk. It's all going to start up front for the Dolphins, you have to be able to get the ball to your playmakers before you can even think about having playmakers. After that I think the next safest pick is Chris Long. He's going to be a great player. Third best is Darren McFadden...the Adrian Peterson comparisons I think are a bit lofty. He, is good but I think if people are expecting him to put up the numbers that Peterson put up his rookie year, you might be asking a bit much. McFadden is a talented back but he could be going to some crowded running back situations, New York Jets or Oakland Raiders.
But, the draft doesn't end after after round one. A lot of great players are taken after round one, guys like: Marques Colston, Tom Brady, Donald Driver or even Brandon Jacobs, just to name a few. In the later rounds of this years draft I think there could be a lot of solid players. Mike Hart, Ray Rice, Mario Manningham and John David Booty are a few that I come up with..in my opinion. Even defensively a guy like Lawrence Jackson or Calais Campbell..both of whom have dropped out of the first round.
It's interesting to me how so much stock is put into the first round..but the later rounds are just as if not more important. Guys who were projected to be studs that were taken in the first round are already out of the NFL and guys who were later round players and not supposed to be anything are Pro Bowlers. A guy like Jamal Reynolds..predicted to be the next great defensive end..ehh not so much. The bust of this years draft is going to be....Felix Jones. That's right. The guy is being projected as a first round draft pick and, honestly, in my opinion he could never be the guy at running back in the NFL. He should have stayed at Arkansas for his senior year and proved that he could be the guy. If I were a GM I wouldn't waste a first round pick on a running back who hasn't proved he wasn't even the guy in college.
