I liked the first pick as did most of NY, and didn't like the 2nd pick (probably as most of NY). Vernon Gholston will allow the team to get more pressure without bringing more players on blitzes. This is of course a good thing. But then came a trade back into the first round, to get.....Dustin Keller???? I thought this was a dumb move, but they must have seen more than the average fan in interviews and private workouts. Then I thought about it. The Jets are trying to work off of a run first offense, and set up play action pass, and have a tough, aggressive defense. Good recipe to win games I guess. But do you really have to move up to get Dustin Keller? While I don't know the answer to that, I am guessing that they will get a bad rap for picking up a TE when they could have gotten a Fred Davis or someone else. While some were ranked higher, none are as athletic.
With Chris Baker acting an ass, this gives them insurance combined with the Bubba Franks signing. Also, they may be trying to move Baker behind the scenes and avoid the hastle of a LC, Pete Kendall situation. At any rate, I'm guessing that they try to run more 2 TE sets, to give the RB more blocking, and split out Chris Baker (if he's still around) and Dustin Keller when the defense plays more LB's to stop the run. If that is what they're thinking, than I can dig it. And while they may get a negative draft review for not getting areas of need like backup OL, or CB. I think that maybe, there's a chance that this guy can do some things on offense, and the Jets win more games, and months later it seems like a good move. So I hope Gholston has 14 sacks and Dustin Keller hauls in 600 yards and 6 td's in 08.
Now we just need some lineman to back up the starting 5 and maybe a CB. What do the rest of you jets fans think?
