My NFL Draft Rant

I don't normally blog about the NFL, but I have to make an exception here.

Just a few quick rants about the NFL Draft...

Remind me once more why the draft is televised.

I remember (hearing about) the good old days when the Draft wasn't even televised and we would pick up the paper to see which teams got which players. That would have suited me just fine, but noooooo. In this day in age everything needs to be presented immediately as it happens. What's wrong with finding out the news in the morning? It won't go away.

I mean, the draft is the most boring televised sporting event on Earth next to the National Spelling Bee.

We're now in the 6th hour of the Draft and the excitment is still up to the roof!

I keep telling myself year after year that I'm going to do something productive like write a novel or something, but I continue to watch it... Don't know why...

Are Jets fans stupid or just bored?

Is it me or is it just the New York Jets fans who apparently base their entire season off the NFL draft? ESPN will throw the camera towards the crowd, and you may see a few Packers fans, one or two Bengals fans, a Ravens fan... and then there's 40 Jets fans screaming at the top of their lungs "J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!" and jumping up and down in their seats like they just won the frickin lottery.

Why are they there and why are they so excited to be there?

I watch the draft (sadly), but I don't get that excited where I would head down to the theater with my Bears jersey just to watch some football players I've never heard of get drafted by teams I don't care about in an agonizingly long and pointless process...

but Jets fans love it for some reason. Do they just have nothing going on this weekend?

Didn't see any Giants fans there, so don't say it's just because its in New York. Those guys were excstatic to be there and to me it looked like they wouldn't be anywhere else in the entire world. I can barely handle watching it at home. Don't know how people can do it. Or why they would even want to...

Am I the only one that is fed up with speculating draft picks?

After the Draft closes for the night I take a look at the TD board and there's a few Brohm v Henne "Who will be better in the NFL" and a couple "Who will be the best player out of the draft" TDs.

Really, people, do you realize you're speculating on this without any factual evidence or stats in front of you?

You would think that football fans would learn not to judge players as "the next INSERT HALL OF FAMER HERE", but they continue to do it. For example, when Reggie Bush was drafted, everyone were crucifying the Texans for passing him up, saying he's the next Emmitt Smith and other dumb crap like that. Turns out Reggie isnt as Smithy as we all thought, and Mario Williams has become a pretty good D Lineman.

Look back further in history and you'll see so many NFL greats who were drafted later than you'd expect.

Tom Brady (of course, but I'm trying to prove a point so gimmie a break)- 6th round, 2000

Richard Dent- Super Bowl XX MVP, Chicago Bears all-time sack leader with 124 1/2 sacks- 8th round, 1983

Terrell Davis- He and John Elway led the Broncos to two Super Bowls- 6th round, 1995

Joe Montana- one of the Greatest QBs of all time wasn't drafted until the third round. 1979

LC Greenwood- Waited til the 10th round to be drafted and teamed up with Mean Joe Green as two of the most dangerous defensive linemen in the league in the 70's. 10th round, 1969

Greenwood turned out to be one of the best Defensive Linemen of the 1970's.

Shannon Sharpe- considered to be one of the best Tight Ends in recent NFL history- 7th round, 1990

... and of course we all remember the busts. Ryan Leaf. Curtis Enis. The list goes on.

My point is, why do we still even bother speculating when we know college stats mean absolutely nothing?

We know for a fact that the NFL is a whole different ballgame compared to college. Faster. Bigger. Stronger. Some college players can make the transition. Some can't. ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN WHO CAN AND WHO CAN NOT! STOP TRYING TO.

Alright I think I'm done...

Who the hell is this guy anyways?

To whichever intern wrote this:

I know you're being rhetorical and sarcastic but that's Fireman Ed. He's a NY fire fighter who was injured on the job in 2007. He's the Jets' answer to barrel man but also a hero. And you're really surprised that a bunch of Jets fans go to the draft in their city? Lots of Giants and Eagles fans too. Good job cut and pasting the names of draft gems Mark Clayton and Peter King have been writing abouit all week, by the way. I guess you don't have to know much about sports to work for SI.

It's marketing, pure and simple.

It's the NFL's wake-up call, saying "Hey, we're here, you can hit snooze, but training camp starts in a few months."

They hype up every player in the 1st 3-4 rounds like they're all future HOFers because it gives fans of 31 teams that didn't win the Superbowl hope that these guys will either get them out of last place or get them over the hump. They know half of these guys (or more) will be busts, but hey, why not give fans hope?

PS - I saw quite a few Giants fans there.

PS-2: Did you see the shots of Chad Henne while he was waiting to be picked. They showed a 30 second clip in which he yawned almost non-stop. Classic!

Stauff,
This is the first year I even paid attention to the draft via NFL.com and if it were any more boring, they'd call it baseball. I'm going back to getting my draft news from the newspaper.

Why they allow a live audience in the room with everyone else is a mystery to me. It seems worse than a political convention. Bah!
