While it may be understandable and necessary to ramp up the degree in which the rules in the NHL are enforced, there is simply no need for Chris Pronger to have been given a suspension for the second time in these playoffs. When Pronger was suspended for the Holstrom hit, it was irritating but the rationale was understandable, this time Pronger was simply making a defensive play, but took his elbow too high. Pronger certainly crossed a line, but this offense has a name and its called, "elbowing" and it carries a two minute penalty.
Pronger is a rough and tough NHL defensemen that likely intended to be a bit over zealous in his hit; however, this penalty simply does not fit the crime. The NHL is crossing its boundaries with this suspension and essentially now has handed game four to the Sens.
By the way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hzlI1TqL6w will provide you a highlight of the hit. Pronger's elbow catches the Ottawa player and causes him to drop, but it was hardly a hellacious play that deserves such intense condemnation that Pronger should have to have a 60 minute penalty for what is typically a minor penalty.
Have we really come this far in sports? Physicality is still part of the game.
