The 2008 NFL draft for the Green Bay Packers probably could have been better. It probably could have been better because honestly I don't think we really improved. Honestly, there were only three picks that I really liked: Jermichael Finley, Brian Brohm and Patrick Lee. Other than those three nobody else really stands out to me. But, I'm gonna give you my thoughts about each of the Packers picks.
Jordy Nelson, WR Kansas State- To me this was a wasted pick. We should have never traded out of the 30th overall pick. If we would have stayed at 30 we could have gotten Brandon Flowers. Flowers, I think is more capable of stepping in right away and helping out. He's going to have a hard time finding a spot on the roster.
Brian Brohm, QB Louisville- This, in my opinion, is the best pick of them all. I like getting competition for Aaron Rodgers. I think he's going to be able to come in right away and possibly push Aaron for the starting job. He's a solid quarterback and is pretty much game ready right now. He's at least our number two quarterback.
Patrick Lee, CB Auburn- Another pick I'm very excited about. He's 6 feet tall and 194 pounds. Lee can be a big help at corner. He's big and physical, which fits in great for our scheme defensively. The only real problem about Lee is that he only started a year at Auburn..can he keep it up? He's not going to have come right in and play right away..so he'll be able to learn.
Jermichael Finley, TE Texas- I like this pick..because well we need help at tight end. He can help us out. I think he's got a lot of potential..he, more than any of our other draft picks is going to have to contrbute right away. We need him to play right away.
Jeremy Thompson, DE Wake Forest- He can help us. I was reading what a Packers scout had about him...basically he can help us out in our pass rush at first...but eventually he can develop into a complete defensive end for us. I'm not sure about this pick. There's going to be room for him in our defensive line rotation..he just needs to take it. Last year at Wake he had 6.5 sacks. The scout also wrote, he thinks, that Thompson can add 10 to 15 pounds onto his frame and still play with the same speed that he plays with now. The jury is still out on Thompson.
Josh Sitton, OG Central Florida- We need more bodies on the offensive line. He could possibly push for some snaps. He was on the line for Kevin Smith in his record setting year. It'll be interesting to me to see how he adjusts to our blocking scheme.
Breno Giacomini, OT Louisville- This to me is an underrated pick. Both of our tackles, Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton are getting older. So, I think it was wise for us to draft a potential replacement for them. He was a consistent starter at Louisville. He's going to, hopefully, get a chance to just sit and get used to being in the NFL.
Matt Flynn, QB LSU- This pick makes little if any sense to me. We drafted another quarterback, which I liked, previously. I understand competition...but I don't think he's the right guy. I have a hard time justifying this pick. He's going to have a hard time moving up our depth chart, I think...Brohm and Rodgers are going to be given all of the opprotunities..basically Flynn is going to have hope that everyone else really, really messes up.
Brett Swain, WR San Diego State- I was reading about him and the scouts think he can be an excellent return man. He, just like Jordy Nelson, is going to have a hard time making this roster. We are pretty much stacked at wide reciever, I can at least justify this pick though. At least maybe you've found a practice team guy for us.
What are your thoughts or comments about the Packers draft. Am I right or wrong?
