The best runner in the league, a monster, future Hall of Famer… all titles by which Adrian Peterson has been called after his first season carrying the rock for the Minnesota Vikings.
Is he as good as his hype?
I truly believe that A.P. is a good back and will have a bright future in the NFL. With that out of the way, why is he as highly coveted as he is? Is it because he single-handedly destroyed the Monsters-of-the-Midway in week six posting 361 all-purpose yards? Or is because the rookie out of Oklahoma came back three weeks later and set an NFL record of 296 rushing yards against the Chargers?
Before the draft that landed Peterson in Minnesota, the Vikes signed a true “monster,” Steve Hutchinson to a seven-year $49 million contract. This move WAS and IS the key factor to the success of Adrian Peterson as a RB in the NFL. Not only did this move bring in one the best OL in the business, it completely solidified the left side of the Vikings line. By scribbling Hutchinson’s name on the starting lineup between C Matt Birk and LT Byrant McKinnie, Minnesota immediately had one of the strongest blocking tandems in the NFL.
You may say that Adrian Peterson might have been just as productive his rookie year even without the likes of Steve Hutchinson. Maybe he would have been. I am not so sure! What happened to Shaun Alexander when Hutchinson exited, what happened to the running game in Seattle at all?
Alexander became banged, bruised and beaten by opposing defenses is what happened. He fractured his toe, fractured his wrist, had a herniated disk in his neck, twisted his knee and ankle and was eventually replaced and released by the Seahawks. Insert “Madden Curse” comments here…
How did the X-NFL MVP have such a fast decline?
Shaun Alexander tore apart defenses in the seasons prior to the departure of Hutchinson. Then all of the sudden you take away his leading blocker and he can’t get off the stretcher. If you put a mended and healthy Alexander behind a solid-offensive line he will be as good as he once was. Side note: some team will get a steal when they take a “risk” and sign him.
However good I think Peterson is or can be, the signing of the Pro-Bowl guard to Minnesota pre-dating his arrival gives me questions. That being said, I will continue to watch him shred apart my beloved Bears defense and wonder what if Chicago could’ve landed him first! All hail Cedric Benson.

I too question the love for Peterson, but for different reasons: He was only in the NFL for ONE YEAR. It is far too early to say that he is God or the GOAT, as some are claiming. Not only is that talk an insult to the TRUE GOAT Walter Payton, but it is also an insult to the one who will eventually take over Sweetness' spot in football lore and legends: LT. Once Tomlinson retires, he will enter the Hall on the first ballot. He will have solidified his role as football's greatest back.
The second reason is that Peterson has to shake the injury bug. Some may go as far as to say that he is injury prone. Indeed, he has yet to prove that he can go for an entire season without an injury.
As for him carving us up, I don't think it will happen again. Think about this way. Our D had many of our starters knocked out last year. You can thank the ****ing Cowgirls for that. When the D is comprised mainly of backups, then yes, things like that will happen.
We can also blame the injuries on our D to the lack of offense last year. Outside of the tight ends, there really wasn't a bright spot on the offense. People were dropping passes that my dead grandmother would have been able to have caught. People like Berrian did not show any heart. Benson didn't show that he can make cuts to the left or right, and ran right into defenders. Our offense simply sucked on almost every level. Because of that, our defense had to stay on the field much longer than they should have. A tired defense can lead to injuries, and last year should serve as an example of this. Now that the Draft has come and gone, and we have been signing UFAs, I think our offense will be greatly improved this year. Williams at LT spells Tait at RT. That makes the blocking much better, giving our guys more time to get things done.
We have also picked up 2 undrafted QBs in Caleb Hanie, whom Kiper is very high on, and Nick Hill. While I was pissed that we didn't pick a QB up in the Draft, I understand why Angelo didn't do so. Outside of the top guys, nobody really stood out as someone who was a must have prospect. There may have been a few hidden gems, though. If what I have been reading about Hanie is true, then perhaps our QB situation isn't as dire as some make it out to be. We'll see in due time.
Overall, I would say that if we were to put the guys we picked up in the Draft on the field and went up against Peterson and his Queens, things might be very different. Let's hope balance has been restored in the universe, and things will be alright.

wow to even question his abilty is just crazy. once he gets past the line there is no huctington or no birk. it is AP if u even watched a 1/3 of the games he played last year u will see how stupid he made LB,CB, and safetys look. And what makes AP even better is his line, its a team effort, thats why it is a team sport. I mean look at Reggie Bush, in college it was all about him and him making plays but two years into football he has really done nothing. SO u have fun this year watching the viking DESTROY the NFC North and most of the NFL. Maybe not a SUPERBOWL YR but Man are we almost there almost. GO VIKES

aplover, what's there to be jealous of? The Queens have never won a Super Bowl. They have only 1 NFL Championship, and are 0-4 in the Super Bowl. I'm NOT sorry to say that. I sincerely hope they NEVER win it.

RanMan and aplover - do you seriously believe that Peterson would have been just as effective without Hutchinson lining up on the left side? The majority of the big-time runs he made last year was to the left. As previously stated, I do think AP is and will continue to be a good back in the NFL, but a lot of the credit for his success and overrated status is in large part due to his beast offensive line. He can move with the best of them in the open field but put Hester in the backfield with your offensive line and he could accomplish the same feat. Put him or AP behind a crappy line and it would be a different story.
You say he's not overrated, but people were calling him the 'best runner in the league' after only 6 weeks into his rookie campaign. How is that not overrated? And then after destroying the Chargers in week 9, he had only one +100 yard game. That included a 45 yards to GB, a dismal 3 yard outing to the 49ers, 78 yards to the Bears, a 27 yard feat at Washington, a mammoth 36 yard game in Denver. Also two games injured where he did not play at all. Best back in the league. I think LT along with Willie Parker, Joseph Addai, Frank Gore, Maurice Jones Drew and Brian Westbrook would have something to say about that.

are you kidding? Put benson behind steve and matt. See how good he does. I bet he does **** like he did for the bears the whole time he was able to play. No argument against the no superbowls. It is a fact, but i'd rather have the hope that our team has now, than have the p.o.s. team chicago is. Good luck haters!

This argument is not even about Benson, that is a moot point. I think we can all agree that Benson is not a very effective back with or without blocking.
I know it's tough to read with a 2nd grade education, but this argument is about Adrian Peterson being overrated. Challenge the fact that Chester Taylor also shared more success running behind your offensive line that featured Hutchinson than one without.
2006 Stats (without Hutchinson):
- Chester Taylor 303 attempts, 1216 yards, 4.4 ypc, 6td
- Artose Pinner 43 attempts, 190 yards, 4.4 ypc, 3td
- Brad Johnson 29 attempts, 82 yards, 2.8 ypc, 1td
- Mewelde Moore 24 attempts, 131 yards, 5.5 ypc, 0td
2007 Rushing Stats (with Hutch):
- Adrian Peterson 238 attempts, 1341 yards, 5.6 ypc, 12td
- Chester Taylor 154 attempts, 844 yards, 5.4 ypc, 7td
- Tarvaris Jackson 54 attempts, 260 yards, 4.8 ypc, 3td
- Mewelde Moore 20 attempts, 113 yards, 5.6 ypc, 0td
In 2007 your "top 4 rushers" averaged 5.35 yards per carry, In 2006 (without Hutchinson) they averaged 4.275. A yard less per carry. Chester Taylor, comparing apples to apples, averaged 5.4 with Hutch and 4.4 without. Even your QB had 4.8 yards per carry!
Again to clarify, since you can't obviously can't decipher what I was saying. In plain view - A.P is good just not the 'best runner in the league'. And the MOMENT he was called that, was the moment he became overrated.
Side note - Here's to your "HOPE," hope that Berrian can catch more than a cold. Live and die by your overpriced signing. Good riddance Bernard, go drop some passes with Vikes. If you thought Grossman couldn't throw a ball, wait until T-Jack sits a duck up there for you. BTW, inside secret Minnesota fans, Berrian doesn't fight for balls. Ooopps! Did I let the secret out! My bad. I wish I could take that one back!

Sorry to tell you, but hutchinson was with the vikings for all of 2006. Maybe you need to do some more research before you go ranting your facts. So go back to 2006 with what you typed and add WITH STEVE. See what I mean you guys? They say what they like and have no idea!

And to save you time. He played in and started all of the 16 games in 2006. And second grade? If that was true, I'd still have gotten further than your whole state did.

And you compare Jackson to Grossman? I know Jackson isn't even considered good by most people, but Grossman did worse than Jackson did.
Grossman - 4 tds 7 ints 1,411 yards, and 66.4 rating.
Jackson - 9 tds 12 ints 1911and 70.8 rating.
And you can say Jackson had 4 more games, but the only thing Grossman beats him in a per game ratio is yards. I hope you guys understand what i mean when i say "per game ratio." You don't win by yards alone. Sorry Bears fans your thoughts and facts are flawed.

My point is to your joke, if you are going to call me a Neanderthal because of the team I like I might as well call you an animal or something else is not funny because your team is called the bears. It just isn't funny. Not even educated at that. Heres one you might find funny if you like your neanderthal joke. Man those jets fans are airplanes, or how about, or dang those indians. And if you are too slow to understand that I'm talking about, thats in reference to the redskins. I'm just saying that joke is probably about as funny as walking over glass.

I am man enough to admit when I am wrong. I thought that Hutchinson came in the 2007 season. I was unaware that he actually was there for the 06 season. That being what it is actually makes the impact of Hutchinson an even more dramatic addition.
Your Running Backs averaged the following yards per carry in each of these seasons:
2007 - 5.53 yards per carry
2006 - 4.63, yards per carry
2005 (without Hutch) 3.33 yards per carry
1.5 to 2 yards less per carry without the ProBowl Guard!
In 2005 (without Hutchinson) your top RB, Mewelde Moore average 4.3 yards. Apples to Apples, Moore average 5.5 and 5.6 yards in 06 and 07 seasons, respectively (with Hutchinson).
I do apologize for my earlier lapse. However, thanks to you pointing out my error, my argument was stronger than before. Hutchinson makes all running backs better. He did it for Moore, he did it for Taylor, and he is making Peterson better. ADRIAN PETERSON IS OVERRATED!

I figured you'd go about it in that way. It's all good. I do understand how people can say he is overrated. I do not think he is the best back of all time. But I think he is definitely think he is on his way. I just think he deserves more credit than you people are giving him. I dont think you can use Mewelde Moore. Dont get me wrong, he is a decent RB, but he is not even close to the same caliber of taylor or peterson.
