Correct me if I am wrong, because I know you will.  The following collegiate sports have a playoff system: Basketball, men's and women's, all levels.  Football-all levels except the BCS. Did anyone read the comments of the BCS muckety mucks?  The conference chiefs and suits that own the sport? I have never seen such pure contempt, arrogance, obfuscation, and indifference for the paying customers of the sport-the fans.  Let me summarize their position, in my own words.  Here we go.

1) We don't really want a playoff, and we are willing to create stupid excuses as to why it won't work, even though every single pro sport and most every other college sport has one, and it is wildly successful.

2) We don't really want a playoff, and what the fans want (the donors, the ticket buyers, the television watchers,  the rabid, mouth foaming freaks like me) want is totally and completely irrelevant.

3) We don't really want a playoff, because you suckers keep buying these overpriced bowl tickets and watching these meaningless bowl games, so we are fat, dumb and happy, flush with tv money and a big gate from each meaningless game.

4) We don't really want a playoff, because crowning a true national championship does not line our pockets with filthy lucre, so would everyone just please shut up and go away, and have your little elections and computer programs to get your champion?

5) We don't really want a playoff, and our panty wearing suckbutts like Stewie Mandell willingly embrace our postion like it was handed down on stone tablets from God.

6) We don't really want a playoff, and our iron will shall be drafted into multi billion dollar contracts that force the current useless system down your throats until you puke it up and beg for more.  So keep buying those bowl tickets.

7) We don't want a playoff, because it would devalue the regular season and extend the playing season too long.  Thou shalt not question this, because it has no logical explanation. Just accept it and get on with your life.

Isn't that the gist of it? Am I misinterpreting the motives? Am I off base, for wanting a true championship in my favorite sport, instead of a myth?  Is anybody with me on this? I say we stop buying the bowl tickets and stop watching the games. This is absolutely the only thing that will get their attention, y'all.

I agree with you 100 percent..their logic behind now wanting a playoff..is well inexplicable...their needs to be a playoff...

I was surprised to see that on an ESPN online poll everyone voted for the 8-16 team playoff instead of a plus one or the current system.

It's also stupid that the BCS guys are giving us two more meaningless bowl games. The BCS also gave the NCAA a seperate game for the championship without a plus one system. Just stupid.

Oh yeah, guess which state had the highest percentage to keep the system the way it is..... Ohio at %15 which isn't that high but it's still the highest.

The only thing great about Div-1 college football that succeeds every other major sport is how life-and-death the regular season is; so every game needs to be watched. NFL's last three weeks are terrible because the best teams usually rest their starters as much as possible. Who even watches regular season NCAA basketball or NBA basketball?? You know the game of baseball is largely a 6-month marathon only to have some team get lucky in October and win it all the marbles.

They're not meaningless bowls. They are usually awesome matchups between two big programs who never play each other..Think of them as MMA card fights or Heavyweight bouts; they're fun. People in the pro leagues are realizing that maybe the best matchups aren't even in the actual league's championship games just like they are in Div-1 football (mainly NBA with the Western Conference superiority thing...and in the NFL with the AFC Championship Game). So is it perfect? No, but both have become "wildly successful."

I like the idea of having #1 play #2 in some form of a championship in college football. I say they ditch the computer and AP polls and implement a publicized coaches poll to determine the top teams. Then, take the top 10 and match them up in a Sugar, Rose, Fiesta and Orange Bowls accordingly. Or just keep all the bowls and have a 8 team playoff, shorten the season by two games and have the BCS bowls as the sites.

If the Dawgs beat Ohio State in New Orleans, you'd have some sort of "National Champions" on your avatar :) You wouldn't call it bogus then, would you?

It's a weighing of pros and cons.

When I get some time I am dropping a decent (and lenghy) blog on the issue.
There are a LOT of cons other than the cash flow issue, though there are some factors to the money train you likely haven't considered.

Side note - I am in favor of a 4 team playoff. I was in favor of a 5 to 6 team playoff until I thought about the arguments people were making FOR a playoff (not exactly the result they were hoping). Inter conference scheduling will likely have me reducing that to 2 again.
